Does nursery teach phonics?

Hello

We have a 3 years old little one. As I and my husband's first languages are not English we were hoping that our little one learns phonics from the nursery class but nursery said they do not teach phonics in the class. I don't know if it is common as I heard some nurseries teach phonics?

Thanks

Ours did some basic phonics but if yours does not, Alphablocks (CBeebies) is a great resource. There are books as well as the TV shows.

Private or school nursery?
My 3 year old is a school nursery and the teacher says there is less emphasis on phonics stage 2 (letter sounds) and much more of stage 1 (listening skills) than previously.

In nursery, phonics is taught through singing and speaking/listening activities. More formal teaching starts when they go to primary school.

Lavender2021 · 09/01/2024 12:47

Our nursery definitely does phonics as my daughter is starting to recognise letters in her friends name and how all the letter sounds. Can spell out her name with words and with letter shapes spell it out.

PurBal · 09/01/2024 12:50

Yes. But only for key sounds (eg their name).

craigth162 · 09/01/2024 12:50

Ime not any more. When ds14 was young they did at nursery and p1. Not they seem to justpkay until p2/3. Im.not a fan of the changes

We do phase 1 phonics which is to with listening, environmental sounds etc. We don't do letter sounds etc unless they're ready and there is no expectation from Ofsted to do so. Also some school receptions prefer to do it their own way.

But that's private nursery so ones attached to schools may be different as they'd follow the same programme

GooglyPop17 · 09/01/2024 20:47

Not really as all schools use different schemes and a nursery feeds many schools.

They will probably do letters and name writing.

Is it preschool?or nursery?

preppingforlife · 09/01/2024 22:52

Some of the more academic nurseries (the ones preparing for pre-preps at 4+) do teach phonics

Is it preschool?or nursery?

The names are interchangeable across the sector in our LA

We do stage 1 Jolly phonics for the children that are interested in the term before they start school. We don't force them to learn it though but some of the older ones are becoming more aware of letter sounds in their names and start asking around that stage.

InTheRainOnATrain · 11/01/2024 21:09

DS is doing what I think is Jolly phonics (signing about ants on his arm??) and recognising the letters in his name. He’s not quite 3 and is in the youngest of 2 nursery classes attached to a private school so will not start reception until Sep 2026.

Chickpea17 · 11/01/2024 21:10

Yes ares did

Seashor · 17/01/2024 22:51

We do but we are a teacher led nursery in a school so our children are part of a Foundation stage unit. Some of our older nursery children are reading books.

bobomomo · 17/01/2024 22:53

I'm sure that more able kids are able to learn to read, my dd was reading properly before she started school. It was a while ago before the latest obsession.

Overthebow · 17/01/2024 22:58

Ours is a private nursery and my dds class is learning phonics. They’re learning letter sounds, reading and writing basic letters and have started to learn some of the easier blended sounds too.

Overthebow · 17/01/2024 23:00

We have friends with dc at some of the local school nurseries and pretty sure they are learning the same things there too so it just be usual to do this at nursery level.

If you're particularly interested in your child learning phonics I'd look at a preschool rather than a nursery.
