TV & DVD's in nursery???

My dd is 3 and has been in the same nursery since 14 months and I have generally always been very happy with the care she receives but in the last 2 weeks they have watched 'Cinderella' (which I thought OK as they were doing a whole prince and princess thing with dressing up and games) 'Ratatouille' - film (for 3 years olds????) an episode of Fifi and the Flowertots and today apparently Dora the Explorer.

I am absolutely fine with my kids watching some tv (probably a bit more than they should when I am running behind )but I think putting the kids in front of the tv at nursery on a regular basis is a bit unacceptable.

Is this normal? Got to admit I didn't even know they had a tv until last week! I wanted some MNer opinions in case this is normal practice before I go in to question the manager about it all tomorrow!

Some nurseries have TV, other's don't. I suppose it depends on when it is used... such as towards the end of the day when everyone is feeling rather tired, and the children just want to chill out for a bit.
Think you may need to establish the circumstances in which TV use occurs.

Ds1's preschool didn't have a tv. I sent him to preschool for stimulation with other children, not TV time which he could have at home while I do my housework!

I don't think it is very good that they are being plonked in front of the TV for 90 minutes at a time, either. I think it's (shoot me now) lazy of the staff.

I was a bit when one day I thought I was introducing my 3 year old ds to 101 dalmations and he asked me before it started if Cruella de Ville was in it
It transpired he played a 101 Dalmatian game on the PC at nursery!

I have recently found my twins sat in front of a dvd when I arrive to pick them up, this didn't happen at their previous nursery. I can't say I'm particularly happy about it, especially since it just seems to be an easy option for the staff who can get on with paperwork or have a break whilst tv is on, also is difficult for them to go outside at the moment. I have quizzed my DTs about and they tell me it only goes on after afternoon snack, so I haven't kicked up a fuss, yet...but if it is still going on when the weather improves I will rant!

TV for 20 minutes in the 6 hour period they are at nursery - yes maybe. Anymore, than no. As someone said already, they can watch TV at home. You pay the nursery to provide some educational stimulation that you can't provide during those 6 hours for whatever reason.

Recently discovered TV at DD's nursery, when she moved into the 2yrs plus room. I wasn't too happy about it, but it's only 20m a day (I hope), and she loves nursery so have decided to breathe deeply and try not to stress about it.
TV at home when I'm making dinner however, absolutely fine (at double standard)

20 minutes - fine
90 minute shitey film - Not On.

Thanks all - I think I will have a word just to find out exactly how much they are watching - I am hoping the film was a one off but will take a deep breath and try not to mind about the fifi and the flowertots!

Nuresry I worked in had power rangers on everyday, until we protested and they watched things like thomas the tank engine instead. Woman in charge had no idea what power rangers was like until we explained thats why all the 4 yrolds were running about attacking eache other with high kicks.

they were watching the Incredibles when I got there today, which my twins haven't seen before, they didn't like it, said it was scary and they are the oldest there at 4.2! I will mention it tomorrow

dd2 goes to an absolutely fantastic nursery but they do have a period of tv during the lunchtime swap over when there is a lot of coming and going, I'm fine with it. I would be more worried if they expected my dd to be constantly active the whole time she is there, they can't be engaged in activities all the time.

iamdingdong · 04/03/2008 17:44

whilst they were watching that one of the carers was revising the highway code not sure that's what I pay for tbh

Had a good chat with the nursery manager who explained that they allow the kids to watch about 20 minutes of tv during the change over time after lunch when kids are coming and going - also to allow lunch to go down - much like you suggest whizz - am feeling much reassured. She even offered to give me a list of the programmes that they have to check I was ok with them all!
