1 year old bitten at nursery and I wasn’t told..

So I picked my DD up from nursery this evening and she seemed happy enough. Handover was that she had a really good day but ‘was a bit emotional in the afternoon.’

It was only when I got her home I noticed a huge bite mark on her hand.. with lots of teeth so it’s definitely not her as she only has 3. They didn’t say anything at all.. do you think it could’ve gone unnoticed?

I have messaged them with a photo of it and asked why nobody said anything when I collected her but want to make sure I’m not overreacting. I understand kids bite but feels a bit odd.

YANBU you should have been informed.
If there's still a noticible mark it must've been quite hard.

My baby has been bitten twice at creche in the past week by the same baby. Each time I've had to sign an accident form which is also signed by the members of staff who were there and witnessed it and signed off by the manager that she is aware. To be honest I'm not happy about it but what can you do, it could be my little lad biting next week. I'd be upset thought that they haven't told you, makes you think they didn't see it and therefore weren't fully supervising?

Very bad that they didn’t inform you.

As others have said, biting is a phase a lot of kids go through and although it's not nice, I wouldn't be angry if my child was bitten (he has been bitten at least once)

I would be angry if I wasn't told about it as it means the staff either haven't noticed or haven't cared. Any time my child was injured at nursery I had to sign an accident form, sometimes for things that weren't even obvious to me when I went to pick him up or that didn't even leave a mark.

Thanks everyone. Yes it’s not the biting I have the issue with, it’s the fact I wasn’t told.

Their response was..

‘I’m so sorry about that, I didn’t notice anything during the day. A lot of our babies are teething at the moment but I don’t remember her crying out near any of the the other babies or seeing anything happening during the day. I’ll write a form up for you for it. I’ll speak to the other girls in the room as well and I’ll keep an eye out for when she’s back in on Friday.’

Will give them the benefit of the doubt this time but seeing as it’s still there this morning I’m guessing it was pretty hard and can’t imagine her not getting upset over it. She’s very dramatic!

Bites among babies can happen too quick for an adult to see if they are busy so they genuinely may not have seen. If they have a biter in the room be aware it may happen again.

We have a couple of biters at the moment and even with them being kept a close eye on bites still happen in a second.

You should have had an incident form to sign .

did she have a long sleeved top that could have covered her hand so that bite wasn’t noticeable? You said you didn’t notice it until you got home.

I work in early years and biting can happen in a split second. No matter how good you watch children it can still happen. I hope you get a better response from the nursery tomorrow. However i have forgotten to write an accident form before , I spoke to the parents once the child had went home as I remembered and then phoned them at home. I had been distracted by another child who had fallen and just forgot to go back and write the form.
