Nursery lost a child

Ds started nursery at the beginning of this month and there were already things we were unhappy with (lack of updates, vague information at handover even when asked questions, him getting awful d and v and having to go to hospital)

Got a message the other day saying forgot a two year old child on the trip to the local garden, the term was the child was 'not accounted for.' The child was returned by a neighbour thirteen minutes after they left the park.

All staff are being retrained and procedures looked at, but I'm horrified and want to change nursery. I already wanted to to be fair

The nice manager who showed us round last winter has left and it seems it has really gone to pieces

Change nursery.

CountryStore · 22/08/2023 11:42

Change nursery
Report to ofsted

Good lord. I have soent 30 years looking after children. When I took them out I counted them on the coach , when they got off the coach. Five mins intervals. When they got back on and off the other end. Didn’t even take a quiet yes I’m here I always saw their faces. This is a bad nursery. Really bad. Don’t take them back there and find another one.

nappiesandcontracts · 22/08/2023 11:49

Change nursery! That's horrendous.

theotherfossilsister · 22/08/2023 11:51

Thanks all

I should add, they have reported themselves and revised all procedures

Dh thinks it will be safer now as they'll be terrified of it happening again

I've been frantically ringing round nurseries though but all have waitlists

Absolutely move him. If you're not already in touch with other nurseries / childcare providers then you need to contact them today. There's no way I would be sending a child back to the current nursery.

theotherfossilsister · 22/08/2023 11:53

The other option is to delay my return to work but this leaves us at financial disadvantage but I think worth it to keep Ds safe

I am sure there was a thread on here a couple of days ago from the mother of the child whose nursery had left her child at a park and was brought back 15 mins later by a neighbour. They offered her a month free. She has taken her child out of the nursery. Probably worth a search as it must be the same nursery!

theotherfossilsister · 22/08/2023 12:01

Please can you send me a link if you can because I don't know what to search for but sounds familiar, thank you

OP posts:
theotherfossilsister · 22/08/2023 12:02

@Wishitsnows think it's almost certainly the same nursery

Sorry, that link's taking me to location, weirdly x

This is unacceptable. I would definitely be voting with my feet.

theotherfossilsister · 22/08/2023 12:05

I think the other thread has been deleted, is there any way I can view it or speak to the poster @mnhq? I just want to hear it direct from her

I'm in Edinburgh

Ostryga · 22/08/2023 12:08

Absolutely change nurseries. While they might be retraining it’s not worth the risk as it takes time everyone to be up to scratch. They sound awful!

Nonibaloni · 22/08/2023 12:12

wow, I was going to say we are way past nursery but similar happened at my child’s nursery but it was reported by child and no one really believed it was more than “lost” for a few minutes until the neighbour told the parents directly. The nursery was a shit show but I will say Edinburgh Council could not have cared less and getting them to take it seriously was impossible. So hearing it’s Edinburgh again I would strongly encourage the parents to make every level of complaint. Also move your kid. This kind of safety breach is so so basic it means they ARE missing other stuff and it’s not safe.

MariaVT65 · 22/08/2023 12:12

Yes change nursery OP and report to ofsted.

Are there any childminders in your area that could help out? I was left in the shit after our childminder quit, and another childminder could immediately help out on 2 days a week. They can often have odd slots free.

theotherfossilsister · 22/08/2023 12:15

@Nonibaloni I might message you and serif nursery is the same one? I feel to guilty to name here weirdly

I've been calling nurseries all day but will try childminders

Dh is right. But you need to monitor them closely.

Thoughtful2355 · 22/08/2023 12:18

Its not hard to not lose nursery children at the park. its what head counts are for also there should have been enough staff to child ratio to not Lose a child -_- especially nursery age!! I would be leaving

pontipinemum · 22/08/2023 12:39

My DS is 1 and currently at nursery I know when they get older they will be taken to the near by park (right beside them). BUT OMFG how can they have left one.

I do get that young children can run off etc, but to not do a headcount before heading back to the nursery. With 2 year old they need to do a lot better.

I would want to move, but where I am it would not be possible so I would just have to hope that they vastly improve. Also not sure I would let them take DS from the premises.

BendingSpoons · 22/08/2023 12:48

The other thread has been deleted for privacy concerns. I think the OP said it was part of a chain of nurseries. It seems very similar to your situation, so could well be the same.

unknown7 · 22/08/2023 12:49

What kind of questions should be asked/answered at handovers? I do feel as though sometimes I'm not asking enough or being told enough, any tips? Any signs to look out for to gauge if the nursery is right for the child or not?

Duchessofspace · 22/08/2023 12:51

Yes move and you are within your rights too

PeggyPiglet · 22/08/2023 12:51

I would probably change nursery.

That said if Ofsted are all over them for it they'll need to get up to speed very very quickly and probably will.

It's whether you can trust them now, which I doubt many parents would.
