I have been a manager for 31 years at a nursery setting. The age range from 0 - school ,and wrap around care up to year 6 .If you have any questions you would like to ask I’m more than happy to answer them honestly and to my best knowledge

Oh great thank you for posting this :)
my LO starts nursery soon and we have to provide lunch.
not great with cutlery yet… will use it if we pre load so needs constant help (or just uses fingers which is messy but we allow it to help learn). I do try to teach by example and try to get LO to try a few times to load the soon/ fork etc but also want them to enjoy meals so I don’t force it.
ao my question is which type of lunch is best to send to nursery?
they say they will heat up but should we just send with finger food until LO is better with cutlery? Or are staff happy to help with this?

also when should we start teaching to use a knife?
thanks 😊

Firstly stop worrying . Cutlery is a strange thing as culturally it doesn’t always apply to individual families or indeed the individuals development. Far more important that your little one has a healthy diet rather than a style of eating and enjoys this time to talk , and make it a social occasion.so my advise would be as your setting does make it a fun social time and eat as a family . If we offer imposed restrictions this can or may result in food scare …. Keep relaxed avoid grazing at home , finger foods are fine . If your looking for a more traditional style of eating with knifes and forks at home , it’s all work in progress don’t push it go with the flow - texture exploring is really important for children . Pack a lunch that comply s with the settings policy and stop worrying it’s all going to be fine .

Thank you so much. I try to make eating fun and we eat together. My baby actually really loves food, and likes everything lol. Sometimes I wonder if it’s too much food!

Hey Steph , little people don’t have a hand book . There are many for parents ditch them , honestly . If there was a perfect hand book some one would have made a mint. Go with talking to love ones and there experiences , and take what works for you guys x here at any time
