How much do you pay for funded hours

Williams3001 · 06/04/2023 14:19

My little one will be eligible for 30 hours funded childcare in September and I’m just trying to work out roughly how much I’ll need to budget, as I’m aware that the funding doesn’t cover the nurseries’ costs and I will likely need to pay something towards snacks, etc. I live in a London borough so am expecting costs to be higher than some places, but it would be helpful to have a few examples of what other ‘funded’ places cost around the country, to get an idea of what extra things we might be charged for.

£1 per funded hour west London

BernadetteIsMySister · 06/04/2023 14:23

I'm a childminder and I charge £15 per day and only accept it for full days (10 hours).

AlltheFs · 06/04/2023 14:25

It reduced our costs by about a third. So from about £60 a day to £40. Not exactly but that ballpark.

DD attends 4 full days and the funding is stretched over 52 weeks.

TheChoiceIsYours · 06/04/2023 14:26

Three days per week of year round nursery is £304 for us. About a third of what it is without funding, give or take. But we need year round and not just term time/school hours so that makes a big difference.

Sosadsolangafter · 06/04/2023 14:28

£1 per funded hour, which includes the cost for snacks and lunch. You have to pay for the whole of a morning or afternoon session though, so we pay £5 for a morning (8-1), even though we usually do 9-12.30. This gives us the flexibility to drop off a little earlier/pick up later though, so I'm happy with that.

Don't forget funding is term time only....so only paid 38 weeks a year not 52. Which roughly equates to 11/22 a week but many settings stretch over a term to not be caught out if you leave. So summer may be stretched at 195/390 hours over 21 weeks....9/18 ish hours
The voluntary charge is up to you to decide to pay but settings can't run without it. Settings can choose the hours they offer funding normally maximum of 10 hours a day...it can be 9 to 12 1 to 4 for example.
Childminders are often more flexible offering the session you need and charging less as a voluntary contribution.
Schools seem to be above the restrictions with my local one shutting to 15 hour children 18 sessions so far this year...only 4 for initial settling the rest just shut to afternoon 15 hours and open to everyone else.

Our nursery charges £15 per day (also a London Borough). Don't forget funding is term time only though.

Williams3001 · 06/04/2023 15:13

Thanks for all the helpful messages. We do mainly term time anyway at the moment, as his nursery is attached to a school, and doesn’t run through all the holidays anyway. Helpful to know that the time could be restricted to a few long days rather than several short ones as well, so now I know to ask about that!

£6 a day for food. Nursery bill went from about £700 to £25 🤣

Pinkflipflop85 · 06/04/2023 15:29

We pay £6.30 per day (term time only).

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 06/04/2023 15:31

We pay around £300 p/m for 3 days per week, that's with stretched hours so she gets 22.5 hours per week (Yorkshire so costs are probably cheaper up here!)

SurreyMumOfOne · 06/04/2023 15:33

£53 per day.

DD attends FT, so this actually includes a FT discount (!!) and covers all of the extra bits such as meals and nappies, plus covers all of the hours over and above the 30.

SurreyMumOfOne · 06/04/2023 15:34

@Williams3001 The nursery should be able to tell you what they charge, even if she's not yet eligible.

NapoliTutti · 06/04/2023 15:35

I have two children at nursery one funded, the other is too young for funding at present. The funded childs bill is £100 less than the non funded. Our bill for four full days a week for both children is around £2.3k a month.

bluebird3 · 06/04/2023 15:35

Ours charges £18 per funded day. As it's term time only we pay full price for days in the school holidays (roughly £60/day). In the north.

StrawberryPavlova · 06/04/2023 15:44

My childminder charges £2 per day for the funded 38 weeks.

specialklady · 06/04/2023 15:54

DS does 4 days a week, 8-5.
Before the 30 free hours was £880, it's now £330 so a saving of £550!!!

That's with the tax free part taken off.

I'm very excited about DC2 (who's currently in my tummy!) getting 30 free hours 2 whole years before DS did.

nofilteronme · 06/04/2023 16:00

I work in a nursery, ours has increased recently and I'm unsure of the new fee but it used to be £18 per day (7.30-6)
