How far would you travel for the right nursery?

We recently moved house - not actually very far in terms of mileage but in a city so it is a 20-30 minute drive when there’s daytime/rush hour traffic.

We tried to keep our little one in his very lovely old nursery, but the commute became too much and we’ve just moved him. Unfortunately, the new nursery has turned out not to have any other kids his age (all younger) and not looking likely to change soon, so we aren’t happy for him to stay there.

I had already looked around so many other nurseries and felt this new one was the best fit. There are a couple of other options, but we know that the only thing “wrong” with his old nursery was the distance.

If we bit the bullet and went back there, he would end up doing an hour+ in the car every day, and I’d spend over 10 hours of my life doing that drive each week… But at the same time, it’s only for another year and a half (or 3.5 years if our baby follows suit) and what’s that compared to the next decades of parenting?

Would love to hear some opinions either pros or cons of doing that length journey to childcare, thank you!

It's too far, unless there is not a single other option nearer. What about a childminder? Or look for a nursery near to work?

So your lo is just 2 and the oldest or almost 3?

At that age 20 min is totally fine assuming that's literally door to door. Not atypical for London for the best nurseries for parents to do 20-25 mins often 30.

He’s nearly 3, and talking quite a lot. The next oldest child is just a bit over 2, and the rest are pre-verbal. As he’s my first child, I just don’t know whether this is a brief period of being at a different stage to the other kids, or if there will always be enough of a difference to be a big deal.

It’s definitely this balance I’m trying to work out, @preppingforlife Even this new nursery is a 15 min drive due to traffic, so it’s not like I’ve picked a nursery just down the road, but how far is too far im not sure.

I am in the same situation now. What did you do in the end?? Were you able to stick out the commute?
