Rain

My husband dropped my 3 year old off to nurseries this afternoon and it was raining heavily they told him that they like kids to experience all weathers
My husband said loads of kids didn't have coats on and within 5 minutes my sons coat was soaked with rain and he stool shaking and crying in the rain
My husband left and it started raining heavier so he decided to turn around and pick my son up and brought him home..
Just wondering if this is normal
He's my first baby and he's only been at nursery for a few weeks
I understand experiencing all weathers but it wasn't spitting it was heavy rain it just doesn't seem right
I'm just thinking of him catching colds and god knows what else
I don't mind him out in the cold snow or wind but leaving them running around crying and cold in the heavy rain just didn't seem right to me
What are your thoughts?

I'd say you're being a bit precious. The nursery workers won't want 30 kids crying so theyll make sure theyre dry and warm at some point. I'd make sure your son has wellies, a puddle suit and an extra spare coat if needs be.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 27/09/2022 13:34

I think you're over reacting. They will dry off and warm up inside, it's not the depths of winter. I've been settling my son in for last three weeks so I've spent a lot of time there, I would observe many parents dress the kids not very practically. They are outside a lot so they need layers and waterproofs. It's lot of messy play.

FlounderingFruitcake · 27/09/2022 13:37

Outside in the rain in appropriate clothing (wellies, puddlesuit) is fine. Outside without coats getting drenched is not ok.

icelollycraving · 27/09/2022 13:37

Buy some good wellies, waterproofs, kids like splashing in the rain but they need to be dressed for it.

RoseslnTheHospital · 27/09/2022 13:39

Why was the drop off outside and why didn't the nursery workers take your child inside initially? Was your child wearing a suitable raincoat?

The nursery that I used to use would get the kids in wellies and decent raincoats and then take them outside. There would always be a covered area available if they didn't want to actually be in the rain directly. What is the set up at your nursery, what's the outside space like?

SquigglePigs · 27/09/2022 13:41

I'm with you. I wouldn't be happy with that. Little ones get very cold very quickly. It's not like at home when you can change their clothes, wrap them in a blanket and give them a warm drink when you get back inside.

Our nursery gets the kids outside as often as possible. All wrapped up in coats and gloves against the cold in winter, playing in the snow etc. But they're also sensible and they don't go out in torrential rain and they don't go out in the heat of the midday sun at the height of summer.

Numbat2022 · 27/09/2022 13:43

Is your son's coat not waterproof? He needs a puddlesuit really, plus waterproof coat for autumn/spring, thick warm coat for winter, hat and gloves. Oh and wellies obvs.

You don't get colds from being cold/wet, they are a virus spread by human contact. If he's only just started nursery he'll probably get one every 2-3 weeks for the next year or two.

rainbowsandstarshine · 27/09/2022 13:43

My DD went to an outdoor nursery so they were outside all weathers 90% of the time as long as they are appropriately dressed it is fine.

NuffSaidSam · 27/09/2022 13:43

How were the other kids? Were the rest of them cold and crying too?

It doesn't sound ideal that kids were out with no coats on, but did they have puddlesuits on instead? Or does he mean they were literally in t-shirts/jumpers? Because that sounds very unlikely tbh.

Caspianberg · 27/09/2022 13:48

I wouldn’t be happy with that

At ours they don’t go outside when it’s raining. They do go out when it’s stopped and soaking wet or if already out and light drizzle.
However, every child has to have full rain dungarees and waterproof coat left at nursery all the time so they can put on the children.
It rained last night, and all the children were only allowed outside in rain dungerees this morning. Any child who hasn’t had them left borrows or stays inside

littleducks · 27/09/2022 13:52

Well there are forest school nurseries with no buildings at all and the children don't get ill constantly. Is his coat really suitable if he was wet and cold so fast?

The whole thing sounds very odd.

SunshineClouds1 · 27/09/2022 20:22

I wouldn't be happy either.

My nursery don't go out when it's heavy, afterwards they do or light drizzle.
Send him wellies and relevant outdoor wear.

Assuming he has a change of clothes in his bag regardless?

Tumbleweed101 · 27/09/2022 20:58

Provide suitable clothing for the weather at nursery as children do go out to play in all types of weather. It helps them learn to understand why they need coats etc, what being wet feels like. Better they have some experience before it gets really cold as they know why they have to put on appropriate clothing.

Mysterian · 01/10/2022 10:46

So many nurseries say they believe in the outdoors, "no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothes", and doing anything outdoors that you can do indoors, without being aware of what that means. I'm an "outdoorsy" person and childcare worker and it makes me want to scream.

Wooly gloves only work when perfectly dry. The second a child touches anything wet their wooly gloves get wet and all they do is draw heat away from fingers. They need to be Waterproof.

Boots need to be insulated.

Books are not suitable to have outside in cold weather. If it's minus 5 having an activity that involves sitting still and taking your gloves off to turn pages is not sensible.

Waterplay. Seriously. I've worked in nurseries that had ice forming in their water trays that still let children play in them. And warm coats have sleeves that can't roll up so they get wet, and aprons don't fit over the coats.

You might have misinterpreted what was happening, or they might not know how to implement their ideas properly. I suspect the latter.

coldcaff · 01/10/2022 20:08

I work in a nursery and we take the children out in (almost) all weathers. Obviously clothes need to be appropriate. (Sadly some parents don't provide the correct clothing and we have limited spares to lend.) Also, we wouldn't stay outside for ages in the rain in the same way that we wouldn't stay in the sun on a very hot day.

jeffnc · 01/10/2022 21:29

Our nursery manager says there's no such thing as inappropriate weather, just inappropriate clothing😂

Your child needs wellies, a puddle suit and rain coat for winter at nursery. They go outside to experience all weathers. It's normal.

TheTeddyBears · 01/10/2022 21:55

Maybe it's normal at some nurseries but not with no coats on! Not normal at the one my kids go to. Yes sometimes they might go out in the rain and have a bit of splashing and fun with appropriate clothing. Not in torrential rain though. I wouldn't be happy with that either.

Amummy1 · 07/10/2022 10:34

my Nursery is the same, I called up my nursery suggesting during torrential rain if my son keyworker would suggest some indoor activity for torrential rain only. I don’t mind him playing in the rain but not torrential rain. Think they should use some common sense during heavy downpours. I’m speaking about my nursery🙄

Amummy1 · 07/10/2022 10:40

Anyone conceived naturally after having a successful ivf baby?

I'm sorry - you think your child's nursery is not providing indoor activities during wet weather?! Please be sensible
