Plumstead Common nurseries

Had an offer on a house accepted in the Plumstead Common area of London. Turns out there's no chain so it will hopefully go through relatively quickly and we need to find full time childcare for DD 18 months - eek! She's in a nursery right now and loves it, so that is my preference over a childminder. I'm very aware that we probably won't get much choice as lots of places probably don't have spaces at such short notice but anyway, to get me started on my research...can anyone recommend a good nursery in the area?

Hi Lobsterz I can recommend Plumstead Manor nursery next door to the secondary school. My daughter loved it there.

Top tots seems to be the one I often see recommended in the area

Top Tots has a year long waiting list with unborn babies on it. It’s a pack away nursery in a hall, bear in mind. I think it’s one of those things where because it’s popular by word of mouth, it’s over subscribed, I don’t think it’s necessarily that much better than the others.

Futures is open 7-7 as is First Steps by Plumstead station.

A new one called Bright Stars day care in St Marks church hall has opened where you can pay for only the hours you use.

If you’re up for the walk, you don’t say where you are exactly, Dee’s childcare on Burrage road has an excellent reputation and they take the kids out all the time.

The Coop nursery “Little Pioneers” in Brookhill Children’s centre is really good too, nice toddler facilities, baby room and garden a bit small.

Happy to DM about the nursery I use, we are really happy with it. I have a 16month old and know mums with their kids in above nurseries and everyone’s happy. If I haven’t mentioned somewhere it’s because I don’t know someone with a kid there, not because think it’s bad. The local nurseries seem to stay in touch with each other about best practice, see my thread in this username I had a bit of a panic before returning to work as the nursery we’d chosen was rated inadequate, I spoke to all the managers of the different nurseries trying to find a place and they all seemed to know each other by name.

We’re really lucky here for childcare choice, so I wouldn’t stress about it.

Oh really! it’s the one I always see recommended on the local Facebook group. People seem to rate it pretty highly. A year long waiting list though Shock

Ah thanks all, this is really helpful - I will look at all of these. Yeah, I've been having a bit of a stress because it's the same where we are - the ones that people seem to rate highest have kids signed up before they're born (and we signed her up to one in another part of London this time last year, in prep for a purchase that fell through. I kept on that waiting list just in case we ended up with another property there and we've still not been offered a place!). But then people must move house with a baby/toddler sometimes, right?! Gonna look at all of these and see if I can organise a morning off work to do some visits (in terms of where we are, just to the south of Winn's Common but one or other of us will be going to Woolwich Arsenal or possibly Plumstead Station every day in the short-term to commute so potentially open to options in that direction as well)

I imagine that’s exactly why the waiting list is so long @AHungryCaterpillar! I had 2 weeks to find a new nursery in October and felt awful as that’s the only place people rave about - I didn’t want OP to feel the same way. Loads of happy kids and parents at the other nurseries.

@lobsterz with arranging visits - check with them first, as all of them have very specific visiting time, usually after 3pm. In October some didn’t allow visits still. You might want to call up and narrow them down by price first as it varies hugely.

lobsterz · 21/03/2022 17:34

@ArghNursery definitely - it's going to be a stretch to get the time off and go all that way so I'm hoping I can narrow it down and then visit a couple in one day.

Thanks for the above tips - some in there I will definitely follow up.

Does anyone know anything about Bear Hugs, Timbercroft site, Bright Start on Plumstead Common Road or the Plumstead Day Nursery in Plumstead Children's Centre as those are another couple that came up based on random googling?

Thames Tiddlers and Bonitots both really popular round us, as well as Top Tots.

cafedesreves · 23/03/2022 22:14

PS welcome to Plumstead, amazing place to live!
