Paint on clothes!

Hi all I wanted to ask other mums for advice. My little girl goes to nursery 4 days a week, I always dress her in nice clothes but they are not expensive (mainly from morrisons, sainsburys etc)

Lately she's been coming home with paint on her clothes. I don't mind if it washes out. Just like i don't mind if she gets covered in mud or accidentally gets food all over her, but the nursery she is at purposefully don't wear aprons to promote "messy play".

Which means they never wear aprons to try to keep clean. She came home yesterday and her coat was covered in paint and after washing, it won't come out of the sleeves.

Am I being too particular? Would this bother other parents?

I just wash clothes out as best I can then make sure I send her in the stained clothes to nursery - everything get paint stained in the end

Mrsmch123 · 02/03/2022 22:14

Yeh this would annoy me. A T-shirt maybe but not his coat.

RoseslnTheHospital · 02/03/2022 22:23

I'd expect nursery clothes to get messy and stained. Even coats. I'd get cheap ones from Sainsburys/similar or second hand from relatives. Staining doesn't affect the functioning of clothes and coats, so no need to stop wearing them or throw them away.

Yes same at my daughters nursery. I really would've thought in this day and age paints and pens for kids would not stain clothes. I used to send my daughter in nice clothes (same as you, Morrisons/Sainsburys etc) and they have come back stained and not washed out.
The nursery says they wear aprons "sometimes" but her nice little outfits are ruined now so I send her in them mostly

Yep been there!
Annoying when even the cheaper pretty tops from Asda/ tesco are ruined.
I didn't feel comfortable sending mine back in badly stained tops so would use them as cloths for skirting boards etc!

I learnt to use black/ dark on the bottom half and choose tops that were dark with patterns on or just dark so stains weren't visible.

As for coats I always had one for nursery and one for best as I'd be so annoyed if the nicer one got stained.
If buying one get something dark/ dark patterned.

Alternatively speak to the nursery about the paint. Myself and a couple of other parents asked about the paints affect on the babies skin as it was staining the clothes so we were worried it wasn't water based/ safe. They didn't realise it was staining everything and kindly replaced it when they couldn't confirm it's safety for little ones!

I have a set of nursery clothes and if the paint doesn't come out then it doesn't, it still gets reworn. I also have a nursery coat (very reduced in sale or eBay)

KatesBush1980 · 02/03/2022 23:19

I buy all my sons nursery clothes in the charity shops and keep his decent clothes for weekends - meaning he only needs a few sets of nice clothes. If his nursery clothes get paint on I don't mind at all and if it doesn't come out in one wash they are ragged and replaced
Likewise with the coat - a good coat for the weekend and a couple from the charity shop for a couple of pound each for nursery

Violetmo0n · 03/03/2022 14:37

I'd be annoyed about the coat but clothes wise, no.
We bought stuff from H&M basics for nursery so if they get ruined it's fine.

DTwins went to nursery in lovely clothes.

I learned fast.

DTwins now have a separate "nursery drawer" with outfits that have become stained at home, seen better days, and I replenish every 3mths with a big stash from FB for sale. It was in fact girl twin's gorgeous coat (she only had one coat) coming home on the first and second session, absolutely filthy, that inspired this. She now wears a nice thick Boden one from FB for sale, that was £4.

Decent clothes are for everywhere else now.

@BigPurpleEgg

It would annoy me on a coat tbh, although I do have a charity shop coat for nursery, I feel like it looks a bit shit walking to nursery in a stained coat. But clothes, just send them in old ones. I find it so weird when people dress their kids up for nursery - just why???
Who would be looking or caring, though?
Pinkpepper79 · 05/03/2022 23:56

I have lost count of the amount of times I have started a paint activity and asked the child to put an apron on and they simply walk away. Aprons can create a barrier to learning. Plus there is also an issue sharing aprons and cross contamination especially with covid. Its the main reason why dressing up clothes have been removed.

jannier · 09/03/2022 18:51

Some children refuse to do the activity if it means they have to wear a noise uncomfortable apron. For some the being stopped to put it on is such a distraction they forget to paint and go off as their thought process has moved on.
Id just keep sets of marked clothes for nursery and enjoy the fact they have taken part.

Eileen101 · 09/03/2022 19:05

Only send clothes you don't mind getting ruined to nursery Grin
My kids nursery clothes are hand me downs, bundles from eBay or a multi pack of leggings from Sainsbury's at an absolute push (mostly because eBay bundles in 3-4 are very competitive and I kept getting outbid Hmm).
If it still fits, it gets worn. It doesn't matter if it's stained, it's only going to get more stained...

cafedesreves · 23/03/2022 22:31

I'm so relaxed about clothes... get all DS's clothes 2nd hand. Good for the planet and also doesn't matter if get covered in paint. He still looks super cute!!

Howdiditgetsobad · 23/03/2022 23:09

All my DDs clothes get trashed at nursery. I buy a simple capsule wardrobe of black leggings, a couple of pairs of jeans and a multipack of long sleeved tops. i usually add other nicer clothes when they’re almost outgrown but not when they’re new and need to last. I learnt the hard way!
