Fall at nursery

I need some perspective on this please. My 10 month old fell down 3 steps at nursery last week and has a bruise on his head. The steps are part of a climbing frame thing and I guess they're meant to give the older babies some practice at stairs. It's just a hard floor at the bottom. I'm struggling with the fact that he was allowed to be apparently unsupervised at such a height. He can't walk and can't stand unsupported. I'm also surprised they didn't ring us and only told me at the end of the day. They said it was because he was fine afterwards, although they did also say he had lots of cuddles the rest of the day. Does this sound par for the course or would you be worried?

I would be cross

Why was he on a climbing frame unsupervised

Viviennemary · 13/02/2022 14:09

I think they were negligent. I would be looking for another nursery.

notagainnotagain · 13/02/2022 14:14

At 2 or 3 I wouldn't have such an issue, but at 10 months he shouldn't have been unsupervised AND they should have called you to collect early

cultkid · 13/02/2022 14:21

Have they raised an incident? They didn't supervise him properly and it would stress me out

Complain and change nurseries

Tee20x · 13/02/2022 14:28

Like others have said at 2-3 you expect falls etc but what was a 10 month old doing on that equipment unattended esp if he can't walk or stand unattended.

I assume a staff member would have had to of sat him on it in the first place for him to even get into a position to fall down the steps?

I'd be concerned and looking to move

Sweetpea1532 · 13/02/2022 14:31

Poor little guy!
The fall must have been terribly frightening for him..Hmm
Where were these workers who gave him extra cuddles after his fall when he actually needed them to protect him from a dangerous situation?
And yes, you should have been called immediately so you could take him in to be accessed. Very negligent on the nursery's part.

What other times are the babies being unsupervised since you only found out about this incident because DS was injured?

I'm so sorry OP.Flowers

Do you actually know he was unsupervised? Kids can and do fall in nanoseconds, even if you're with them. Bang to the head should have been checked out though, so they should have contacted you.

Hangingtrousers · 13/02/2022 15:19

Accidents happen. Wouldn't bother me as long as they put a cold pack on it and let you know to watch him that night.

Mysterian · 13/02/2022 19:10

My nursery has this. Is theirs similar?

I have had 4 children through nursery and understand they get bumps and bruises at times - but would be really unhappy with what you described. A child that age in nursery should not be near steps unless someone is there one to one helping him.

happyfroday · 13/02/2022 23:04

@Tee20x have you heard of crawling ?

Honestly OP it doesn't sound ideal that it's turned to a bruise, but accidents happen to all ages. If you are generally happy with the place and you did receive an incident form then just forget it. The frame is in the space for his age then he will access it. As other said things happen in seconds.

Mischance · 13/02/2022 23:16

He sounds very small to be on something with steps - there should be a mat at the bottom anyway.

JennyWI · 13/02/2022 23:55

We have a climbing frame without steps. Everyone loves it (including the crawlers). Our crawlers do try to go up. Maybe its not on a mat because its under a certain height. I know if this were my child I would be livid. Most nurseries have a policy that if it involves the head they ring you and let you know EVEN if it didnt leave a mark. A head bump can be a very serious thing.

sofakingcool · 14/02/2022 00:08

I would not be happy with this

I work in a nursery, we have low level climbing equipment for our little ones - but there is always adequate mats on the floor and a member of staff ready to support (particularly our wobbly new walkers)

Our accident procedure informs parents anyway (online portal) but we'd also call to reassure/ask for collection if required.

Tee20x · 14/02/2022 07:24

@happyfroday obviously - but that doesn't mean he should have been on the equipment unattended whether he can crawl or not.

skkyelark · 14/02/2022 21:31

Hmmm, I think for me it would depend on the details, and how I felt about the nursery otherwise. As others have said, was he actually unattended? If so, that's clearly unacceptable. What are his crawling/climbing skills like? There's a difference in how much you'd hover around a child just learning to navigate these steps and a child that's done it safely dozens of times. Do you feel they've handled previous incidents (of whatever sort) well, or have there been other things you've not really been comfortable with? For me it would be the combination that helped me decide between 'accidents do happen' and 'not really good enough'.
