Covid at nursery - would you send your child in?

Nursery have had 16 members of staff test positive over the weekend and a few children. They have closed pre school building which is where most of the cases are, and as of yet there are no cases in the baby room (where my DS is). However there are 2 staff with covid in other rooms within the main building. It's obviously still spreading and I've kept DS off yesterday and not sending him in tomorrow. This isn't going away any time soon. I'm at work Friday and don't have any childcare if I keep him off, and I will have 2 days next week I'm going to struggle with. I've already used my carers leave. What would you do?

I wouldn’t send him in. I know they can catch it at any point in theory but it’s one thing to take the risk when there’s no confirmed cases and another to just send him in to what is essentially a Covid Petri dish! If you did send him then he could very well bring it back home and you’d be off work ill anyway.

Can your partner/child’s dad not stay off with him? Your job is as important as his even if you do work part time.

Sorry I should clarify I work full time shifts and I'm on the next 2 weekends so dad is helping out already and he was off yesterday as I was on nights Sunday and he's taking Thursday off. So we are sharing. Ironically if I get covid it's classed as medical stand down, not sickness and I get paid as normal!

I would leave till Thur night and ask nursery to confirm if thereb have been any new cases in the past several days among staff or children in his room. If not, I would send him in on Friday.

Helloatmidnight · 09/11/2021 12:51

I'm so tempted to keep him off this week and send him in next week if all is ok but it's almost pointless as it's 10 days isolation so there will be nothing safer about Monday than there is Friday!

Blimey! Errrm I would have to send mine in and need to work and wouldn’t want to ask grandparents as mine may be high risk by this point

Helloatmidnight · 09/11/2021 13:14

I can't leave it till Thursday night either, well, I can but it doesn't leave work much time to cover my shift

2 cases in baby room now.....decision made! My DS will have been exposed on Friday no doubt so got a few days to see if he's caught it

There’s 5 cases in my sons room and he’s had to go in, oh and 59 cases where I work and I have to go in 😅😅😅

whatswithtodaytoday · 10/11/2021 15:32

There are five cases in my son's room at the moment, mostly staff. But we have to work, so he's going in.

We did take him out after Christmas for two months, which was hell, but now we're vaccinated I figure we just have to accept we'll get it eventually. The staff are doing lateral flows every day, so hopefully cases are being caught quickly - it doesn't seem to have spread beyond the initial few so far. Cases also seem much more common in pre-school than baby rooms.

I think I just wanted to gauge how bad the outbreak is before sending him back in as it was all very sudden at the weekend. DP is going to look after him next week if it gets worse but if they seem to be controlling the spread then we will think about sending him back. Poor DS has been ill almost constantly since starting nursery 2 months ago and he has a cold currently (negative PCR at the weekend) so I don't fancy throwing him into the covid den until he has recovered from this! I work for the NHS and deal with covid myself but it's another matter sending my unprotected baby into a covid ridden built (yes I know he will probably be fine even if he catches it)

Building that should say

Following as there's been afew cases at Ds nursery. I'm double vaxxed but still feel anxious about it.

Some of us don’t have this luxury and we have to send them in

Helloatmidnight · 10/11/2021 20:56

Sorry I wasn't accusing anyone else of putting their baby at risk by sending their children in - I'm ultimately going to be sending my DS in some time soon because I can't keep him off for too long as I have to work too!

I'd send in, my DS has had antibodies through bf and I need to work. I've also sent him in through chicken pox, hfm and d&v outbreaks so I don't see it as any different.
