Primary school nursery is full time - question

A primary school nursery is full time only. Does that mean My child won’t be eligible to go because I don’t work so thought I was only eligible for 15 hours? I have a toddler also so can’t work without paying for his childcare.
I always thought primary school nursery was just the morning, but it seems things have changed

Might be easier to as them. Most are just mornings. But I know some that offer extended hours until 3pm at a cost. So they charge from 12-3pm (3 hrs).

I would have thought school nurseries are free anyway in school hours?

Scoobydooobydooooo · 05/10/2021 19:02

Nurseries which are part of schools are free.

Some nurseries open all day as they don't have enough children on the roll and some because they are in deprived areas where the LEA has decided it would be better for the children to be t school earlier.

Em2122 · 05/10/2021 20:17

I thought they counted as 15 free hours, that’s why I’m confused if my child is eligible.

A school nursery is free for the 15 or 30 hours you're entitled for funding for. If they offer full time places and you're only eligible for the 15 hours funded they will ask you to top up the hours yourself. I assume each individual school is different prices but they sort their own admissions for nursery (not the LA) so you can just ask them how much they charge. I'm surprised they don't offer part time places too - the more children on roll the more reception spaces they're likely to fill moving forward.

Hope all that makes sense! Best of luck!

School EY nursery classes are funded exactly the same as preschools and private nurseries. They're not free. Only for the 15 or 30 hours whichever you're entitled to.

As snozzelmaid said they also can not ask you to pay or top up hours just like any other setting. They may do 2 full days and a half day for 15 hours....op have you asked them how they provide the 15 hours only.

TheShades · 06/10/2021 21:41

Our school nursery is open all day but parents can request to do any combination of half or full days. It isn't free, but the 15 or 30 hour funding can be used and then any hours over the funded ones need to be paid for.

insancerre · 09/10/2021 09:36

Sounds like children have to attend every day 9-3, the 30 hours will cover this, if you just get 15 then presumably you will have to pay the difference
I imagine it makes it a lot easier for the teacher and helps children with transition to school

RussianSpy101 · 09/10/2021 09:40

You pay for the top up hours. They’re usually much cheaper than private nurseries, it might be something like £12 for the extra 3 hours per day.

@insancerre
Funding rules prevent any setting school included for forcing additional hours at cost to a parent as its a barrier to education.
