Dirty face and hands

Hey. Anyone else's child come out of nursery with their faces and hands covered in dried food? It actually bothers me. My son is 2 and needs to either be encouraged to clean his face and hands or helped to do so. So far every time he's came out of nursery his face has been caked in dried food from dinner time and crusty snots. I pick him up at 2pm so that's a good couple hours after he's had his dinner maybe even a little longer. I'm not trying to be an annoying mother but it just seems unhygienic and honestly a bit neglectful. The girl who brought my son out had just pulled a baby wipe out of his bag and started trying to get a little bit off his face in front of me so she must of realise it wasn't right? Im conflicted. This is my first child and first nursery experience and so far I'm not really liking what I'm seeing. Does anyone else's child come out like that? I don't mind paint etc as long as he's had fun but surely leaving crusty food and snots on his face is just wrong? But they don't seem bothered? Am I being over the top?

I'll also add that the nursery actually has good reviews and the staff do seem very kind. I'm trying not to get annoyed but I'm going to have a chat with them about it next time he's in I just don't want to come across like I'm being silly about it.

You're not being over the top. I would just say to them that you'd appreciate if they could make sure his face is clean once he's had his lunch. Remember you're paying them!

Hi, I'm a nursery nurse in a two year old room. We clean hands and face after every snack and lunchtime, we do it as a matter of course before they leave the table. If by any chance theres an escapee from the table before they're cleaned then they're apprehended and cleaned by the next adult they are spotted by. It's not too much to ask and you're probably not the only parent thinking it.

@Ginger1982
Thank you for your reply. I will definitely bring it up with them tomorrow. Just feeling a bit sad that I've picked the wrong nursery. Makes me wonder why they get so many good reviews because the first couple times he was pretty dirty but today when I picked him up it was actually shocking the state of his face with crusty snots and foodEnvy x

@WhatTheFoot
It's good to hear from a nursery worker that I'm not being over the top. Also glad you actually clean the children at the nursery you work at and it teaches them a bit of self care too. Thank you x

I’m a baby room leader and this is definitely something I wouldn’t allow! I understand that you can wipe a child’s nose and they can quickly need another tissue, but there’s not really an excuse for dried on lunch from a few hours ago. You’re not asking for much xxx

not too much to ask at all its basic hygiene/cleanliness
a damp flannel on the face /hands after lunch and a tissue and/or baby wipe for snotty nose

Thank you OP for raising this, I'm going through exactly the same.

I mentioned it once on drop off that I'd taught him to clean his face and on that day he was clean but next season we were back to normal.
He has also ended up with an eye infection which might be a coincidence but makes me worry.
I will be raising this again.
