22 stretched funding- help me to understand!

My son is 4 and starts reception in September. He has been attending nursery from around 13 months old, and at aged 3 accessed the 30 hours funding but stretched over the year (rather than termly).
So the 22 hours a week, and then additional on top for the hours above this.

We gave the nursery a date for his final day, and they have come back to us and said the funding runs out on the 8th August and so we need to pay full price for his last two weeks. On the LA website it says the funding is available until compulsory school age or until the child starts reception.

I asked the nursery and they replied the 8th is when the term ends. I just wanted to check….are the nursery right? and if so why? It has left me a bit confused.

Thanks in advance.

I am a bit confused by this statement.
However, is it not down to each Nursery how they stretch the funding ?
The funding is there for 38 weeks, but some Nurseries might only have 2 days across the whole year when they are closed and others might have 2, or 3 weeks across the whole year when they are closed (8 x Bank Holidays, plus a bit extra at Christmas, or for the odd training day). Nurseries have different arrangements for how people pay when the family choose not to bring the child in too. So each Nursery would be 'stretching' over different amounts of time.
I think you can only go by what

Sorry that statement was a bit confusing. There were two options available for funding -30 hours for 38 weeks a year or 22 hours for 52 weeks per year. We went for 22 hours funded and then paid for the additional hours (over 22 hours) that he attends each week.
The 30 hours for 38 weeks basically covers school term times and because we chose to stretch over the year I thought it would take us until he starts school, however the nursery are saying even the stretched funding ends on the 8th August.
It just left me a bit confused?

I would ask them to show you the maths then - as they are receiving 1140 hours of funding (38 weeks x 30 hours).

If they have been giving you 22 hours, then it is 51.8 weeks for the same number of hours. There are 52.14 weeks in a calendar year, so the 22 hours ought to stretch throughout the year then.

When my eldest was starting reception, the stretched funding lasted until she started school (her last day at the end of August). This was several years ago now though. It’s possible the government prevents now them from accessing those funds after the end of term even if you have opted to stretch it.

I take funding as cm when I input figures for stretched funding this year the LA came back saying I couldn't claim that much and said parent needed to pay for hours through summer. I argued it turned out they were missing that the child was not leaving to start school nursery but going into reception...a child on stretched leaving for school nursery can't claim summer holiday as they need to keep back the hours for school nursery which is term time only. ......maybe worth clarifying with LA incase someone has made same mistake.

Cric · 11/06/2021 19:34

I THINK it will be because they don't get the funding in the summer. So they can stretch your funding until the 8th August but as you are leaving them, they won't get your funding for Sept-Dec and so can't stretch it any further. Basically you will have used up all the money they receive for your son and won't be able to access the next lot if funding as you are moving on. I hope that makes sense.

@Cric
No....ive taken funding for years if a child is leaving for full time school the setting gets funding until September 1st....the school get it from then even if the start is delayed...if the child is leaving for school nursery they need to withhold enough to pay the school term time only the following term.....8 hours a week for 13 weeks

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 11/06/2021 19:53

I wonder if the hiccup is due to how funding weeks are worked out. The school year is September to August but the funding weeks (38) are worked out April -March. So the summer term might be shorter than they were expecting (the LA tell you how many weeks you can claim for) and so less hours to spread out for you.

KihoBebiluPute · 11/06/2021 20:53

Wouldn't it depend on when in the cycle of term or holiday the child started claiming the 30hrs funding at the setting? If the arrangement started on day1of the September term and you paid full fees up to and including the 31st August before that then the funding should stretch to 31st August this year. However if you started paying the reduced fees as soon as your DC turned 3 then it is entirely possible that the nursery was stretching the funding from September into August, and they can't do that this year as September's funding isn't coming to them.

jannier · 11/06/2021 21:43

@KihoBebiluPute funding starts the term after they turn 3 so 1st Jan, 1st April 1st September you use your 3 year funding in that actual year so stretched would end for a September start in August 31st....but 4 year olds get funding too so January and April starts would get through to starting full time school year August 31st too. Once you start full time reception the funding stops as a different funding is paid to school r years to age 18. But if you start a school nursery it would be the same scheme. My children all stay with me to reception year. I get paid until August 31st regardless of birthdays so some get 4 or 5 terms funded just like some children start school nursery in January of say 2020 and stay to September September 2021
