Nursery help for speech delay

Hi,

Looking for nursery recommendations, preferably Glasgow Southside, for my 3 and a half year old son who has really bad speech delay?

I just feel the nursery he is in at the moment is not supporting him. I've raised my concerns several times but nothing is improving, I'm not being kept up to date and I would rather move him. If anyone could recommend anywhere to help him as only progress he seems to be making is very slow and only with me at home.

Thanks!!

Has he been referred? If so, SLT should be working with the nursery, observing him with them and giving them activities to do with him.

If not referred yet then getting an assessment is key - there may be quite a long wait so you'll want to get on the list asap.

Sorry, no nursery recommendation - our nursery ( not on Southside) was also crap and refused to see a problem. He finally got SLT in P1 and the school were not impressed that it hasn't been picked up earlier.

Hi, yes we have been working with SLT via video calls and one of the speech therapists has been in twice to the nursery. The first time she recommended things for the nursery do with him to help develop his language however the second visit last week, the things she advised aren't being done. He is being treated the same as everyone else even though he has difficulties. The nursery also won't update me regularly on his progress, they told me they can't do that. I'm just so worried about him and the fact their not taking on board SLT advice.

That is terrible you have been in the same situation with a nursery! Should really have picked that up with your son while he was in nursery. Glad you're getting the help needed. I do find SLT excellent, the advice, tips, ideas they give you. You do eventually start to see progress, very slow, hence why I feel nursery should be doing more. Thank you for your reply!

I’d consider moving him. You don’t need to be battling with them.

Do you have the report written by the speech therapist? I'd suggest you do some of the recommended exercises at home with him. It's usually pretty straight forward. Is he in nursery full time? I'd also look at other nurseries and always ask if they have a Special Needs coordinator. In England it's mandatory to have a key person in a nursery who acts as SENCO but I don't know if that's in place in Scotland?

The website ican.org.uk/ also has loads of resources to support you. Webinars, books, guides, etc.

My advice, having had a DS with severe speech disorder, is that there is a lot more you can do at home than you think. There are a lot of behaviours that you can change in the home to support speech development. I assume you've had his hearing tested? That's usually the first step.

Yes, the speech therapist we are working with have been excellent and I feel we have made slow progress at home with him. It was just when the speech therapist was in the nursery, they aren't doing anything to help support his needs from advice she has given which she told me herself she was disappointed with. So I feel he may benefit being somewhere else to help him develop- I will definitely make sure I ask about a special needs co-ordinator.

Thank you for the website link, I will check this out. His hearing was fine when checked out
