Nursery contract termination

They want ‘half a terms notice’

If I gave notice today would that be feb half term?
6 weeks from now? Or 8 weeks from now? The contract is ambiguous and the nursery is not replying to my emails.

Sounds to me like a full half term. That runs from January until mid February?

Shadowboy · 07/12/2020 19:49

So does that mean I can’t give notice mid term which sounds bonkers? It a house move so lots of money to pay for a service that I can’t terminate until mid feb! I have just this morning had confirmation of an exchange date hence not giving notice earlier...

I would say that if you gave notice now then leave date would be February half term, as you are giving Jan-Feb half term holiday as notice period, thus meeting the minimum length.
Really though you need to get a reply from the nursery.

So with that logic let’s say someone gave notice the second week in of term; they would actually have to give potentially 12-14 weeks notice because some terms are 7 weeks long.

It’s crazy. I sadly don’t have a copy of the contract as we were only given one copy which I signed and it was taken off me so I can’t find out exactly what it means.

I would tell them that you want a copy of your contract and failing them providing that and/or giving clarification on the definition of half a term you will assume that given that the uk terms are 13 weeks long that they mean 6 1/2 weeks so you are giving notice tomorrow (8 Dec) and that your DC's last day will be Friday 22nd January.

Ask for advice from CAB it maybe an unfair contract term if they insist its February half term.

insancerre · 12/12/2020 09:39

Just talk to them on the phone
Give them the last date you need them ask if they can accept less notice

Obviously get a copy of the contract, but half a term's notice is quite reasonable. Its a term quite often.

Say you gave notice tomorrow - the nursery doesn't have time before Christmas to try to get another child to fill your child's place. Its only fair they have half a term to try to fill that place.
