Please I need help . I have a 6 week old son he was pooping fine off his own until 4 weeks ago he stopped. I went to my PD and she advise me on glycerin suppositories. I have to be using them every 4 days so my son can poo. He wont do it off his own without those suppositories. WHEN I do give it to him he poo almost right away and his poo is like peanut butter like texture . I tried pushing his legs up and the bicycle position idk what could be affecting my son I'm really worried and cant do much more please someone help me. Tell me what to do. Advise me thanks

How are you feeding? What makes you think he's constipated?

Mommy27 · 21/09/2020 10:34

Breast fed. Was using similar advanced n switched to enfamil. Started giving him water after the problem but still the same. I give him the suppository every 4-5 days so he doesnt poop everyday which is bad.

Brestfed babies can go a long time without pooing. As long as he's making wet nappies, he's fine.
Don't use those glycerine tabs too often, it will make his insides 'lazy' in a way.

Mommy27 · 21/09/2020 10:51

So should I stop giving him the suppository? Let him poo off his own ? That's what I taught is just that am scared when he doesn't poo for 5 days. So I give him. I never gim him a chance to poo off his own. Why do I do that anyway

What does your midwife / doctor / health visitor say?

BehindtheBump · 21/09/2020 11:01

Breastfed babies can go for up to ten days without a bowel movement- so much of the milk is digestible that very little needs to be excreted so it takes them a long time to form a poo.

Brunilde · 21/09/2020 11:12

My son was breastfed and only pooed about once every 5-7 days. It was still very runny when he did and not constipated. Just seemed to store it up and do a giant poo once per week. Our doctor and health visitor both said it wasn't anything to be worried about. Now he's on solids he goes a few times per day.

Mommy27 · 21/09/2020 12:37

Ok

A breastfed baby can go for up to 2 weeks without a poo. I'm surprised your doctor didn't tell you that.

Newborns can also look like they are struggling to poo. This is normal as their digestive system develops and gets used to milk.

Baby pop should be soft and loose. When they start solids it becomes more like our poo

I saw him straining to poo tonight so I tickled his butt with a qtip n it came out like peanut butter but not so thick but he was crying all through it like he was in pain

Hey I was prescribed suppositorys with my son as he struggled to poop when he was that age. He was also breastfed. I think I ever used them once. Everyone is right about breast fed baby not pooping 10-15 days. If you feel like your baby is struggling do baby massage round the tummy and bicycle movements with their legs which I found really helped - especially the baby massage. Good luck x

Tummy time is very helpful for digestion. Also maybe consider what’s in your diet, be as healthy as possible with fresh fruits and vegetables, while staying away from foods that cause gas. Eg lentils, chickpeas and cabbage

Newborns can seem to struggle with pooing. This bodies are just getting used to doing it.

Honestly, it sounds very normal for a breastfed baby of his age. I'd just leave alone

FourPlasticRings · 22/09/2020 06:21

Yeah, tbh I'd leave his anus alone. And maybe talk to someone about possible anxiety. Definitely get your health visitor to reassure you that this is all normal.
