Nursery gave my vegetarian ds ham slices for tea today!

He's new to the nursery, only started two weeks ago, so of course I filled out the enrolment forms and stated clearly that he was vegetarian. It would seem that the manager hasn't bothered to pass this information on to all members of staff, which concerns me. If meat was restricted from his diet for health reasons, then there could have been serious consequences.
I have other niggling concerns about this nursery, and now I'm beginning to regret sending him there.

ok explain juxtaposition of posting name and vegetarian status please

WorkersforfreEdam · 12/09/2007 18:11

Hmm, doesn't look too good, does it? At ds's old nursery, in each room they had pics of each kid complete with any special diet info on the inside of the cupboard doors where they kept plates so even brand new or temp. staff couldn't avoid seeing them.

Saturn74 · 12/09/2007 18:11

Hmm... not good enough.
Have you spoken to them about it yet?

WorkersforfreEdam · 12/09/2007 18:12

that question also occurred to me - at least my MN name is veggie like me! (It's Edam, btw.)

newgirl · 12/09/2007 18:32

def talk to the manager about and ask what they are going to do to avoid it happening again

id be surprised if it did happen again - its an easy one to remember and he wont be the only one

southeatsastras · 12/09/2007 18:33

that's pretty bad, what if he were allergic to something

MrsWeasley · 12/09/2007 18:36

I second or third talking to the manager and asking them how this will be avoided in future.

At the end of the day they have your child with them and the relationship you have has to be one of complete trust.

Shock
porkpie · 12/09/2007 21:50

The manager wasn't around today, but I'll call him in the morning to discuss it. I'm not very good at this sort of thing, must try not to be too cross or too apologetic for complaining.
I didn't make a fuss with the member of staff who cheerfully told me that he'd just eaten 'loads of ham and bread sticks' since she didn't know he was vegetarian, I just asked her to make everyone else aware in future, she was very apologetic.
No, it doesn't look good, it's very shoddy, at his old nursery there were charts clearly stating what foods were restricted for particular children. What is the point in parents supplying detailed information about their child, such as special diets, likes and dislikes, if nobody is going to take the time to read it and make sure the staff are aware.

Twiglett & Edam, hadn't even thought about my meaty name in relation to this post!!!
It was the first thing that popped into my head when I was thinking of a Christmassy name last year, though I admit there's nothing particularly festive about a pork pie, I used to love them as a child though.

I'd be VERY Pissed off. My ds was veggie until he was about 8 or so, this would have made me cross.

Change nurseries if you're worried.

chipmonkey · 12/09/2007 22:49

I'd be very pissed off too! One girl at ds1's nursery used to give him Petits Filous and eat his dairy -free yoghurt herself because she liked them! Poor pet had a horrible runny green nose for weeks and we couldn't figure out why!

1dilemma · 14/09/2007 00:27

poor you
poor ds
poor nursery worker

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/09/2007 00:32

This kind of fuck up happened at DD's nursery a couple of years ago. They gave her macaroni cheese for lunch despite my daily mentioning, and having written all over the relevant paperwork that she had a cows milk protein allergy.

When they phoned to say she'd been sick (about the 5th time she'd been sick there, mysteriousl ), they were quite indignant about the fact that i get there "quicker than last time". They then rang again and said "whoops, er, she was fed macaroni cheese".

They DIDNT call an ambulance or a doctor. It was left until I got there.

I complained heartily. The key worker got sacked the same day. I kept her there, because after such a serious incident, I figured they'd be pretty wary of it from there on. (Rather than risk the same thing over again at a new nursery...)

porkpie · 14/09/2007 17:43

VenivedivickiQV, that's an awful thing to have happened, I'm assuming they were extra vigilant after that episode.
chipmonkey, and your poor little one too, it's shocking that they were actually responsible for making her ill over a period of several weeks.
I spoke to the nursery manager, of course he was very apologetic, but he was also rather quick to shift the blame onto a junior member of staff, which never looks good.
I have considered moving ds to another nursery, we're still on the waiting list for an alternative one, but I suppose I'm a bit reluctant to move him now that he's settled.
I just feel generally disappointed that there are nurseries out there which aren't providing
good enough care, and I guess I'm feeling a bit guilty for moving ds from his old place, which was really great, and choosing this one.

Unacceptable imo. I have never forgotten the baby boy who died because he was fed dried baby food which contained milk products and he was dairy intolerant/allergic. Not sure which.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/09/2007 22:47

Given cereal with cows milk/cows milk protein, yes.

The case was in court that week (when they did the same to DD at her nursery).

barbamama · 15/09/2007 00:21

My ds is veggie and has been at his nursery for 18 months and this has never happenned to my knowledge. I would be furious if it did. They have signs up in his room about any dietry requirements and every member of staff knew from day 1 he was veggie from me filling it in on the forms. I would take him out if this happenned to me. What if it had been a nut allergy?

Isababel · 15/09/2007 00:30

Kick a fuss, please do. Some nurseries don't take the dietary restrictions as seriously as they should.

Mine got a reality check last month, DS had an allergic reaction while doing baking. They swear they didn't give him anything they shouldn't and perhaps that's true, but, since then they seem to take more seriously my concerns. They said they were quite scared when that happened. So... a lesson for all of us.
