Hello all, im a mum of 2 who owns a number of properties. I manage these myself and am classed as self employed by HMRC.
My application for 30 hour funding has been refused as I am not physically going out to work!.

I trawled through the net and can not for the life of me find any info on what the class as employment, I pay tax, use my home as my office!

A bit on there about being self employed

It does seem to be more bothered about you not earning a lot and being self employed though. Have you rung the helpline.

I know that HMRC stopped seeing "property letting" as being a business for NIC purposes in 2015; unless the activities being carried out were drastically different to normal, or there is another related income stream such as a guesthouse. It could be connected?

"HMRC explains that property letting requires some activity to maintain the investment, but that activity alone is not enough to make it a business. For example, being a landlord normally involves:

· undertaking or arranging for external and internal repairs,

· preparing the property between lets,

· advertising for tenants and arranging tenancy agreements,

· generally maintaining common areas in multi-occupancy properties, or

· collecting rents.

In order for a property owner to be a self-employed earner, the property management activities must extend beyond those listed above."
