Nursery - how to raise a complaint

My lb is 14months, he's teething and of course putting everything in his mouth. I found a piece of soft textured plastic in his soiled nappy. It would have been from what he'd eaten or put in his mouth on Tuesday in nursery. I know it's nothing from my home and I've been with him all week, he's never out of my sight. So I'm very sure it's nothing he's picked up when he's been with me. I'm going to have to raise it with the manager at the nursery. I know one of the girls in the room he's in and I feel he's very well looked after. Any advice on how to approach this without causing a massive issue?

No idea, I would leave it tbh. When mine were little the first inkling I'd have that they'd made me a card would be the glittery poo in the nappy, I think it's just par for the course

It depends what you mean by "complain".

IMHO this will be best addressed by having a low-key chat with the manager, and asking them to be extra vigilant in future. But in all honesty it’s precisely the kind of thing that can and does happen anywhere, every day.

Should you wish to raise a formal complaint, then ask for a copy of their complaints process which will tell you how to proceed. Making a complaint is quite a serious thing, as it will go on public record. Parents sometimes shun nurseries which have had complaints, even when they are not proven or completely unfounded, so I believe everyone should think twice before going down this route. As a rule of thumb, before making a formal complaint, you should ask yourself if you’d be happy to be reported to social services for something similar.

In all honesty a formal complaint, even if escalated to Ofsted would almost certainly be dismissed, based on what you’ve said. With all due respect, it is impossible to positively establish that the item was swallowed at nursery.

I agree that this isn't a huge concern and you're unlikely to get anywhere by complaining.

As others have said, there's no real proof this happened at nursery and even if it did... kids put stuff in their mouths.

You could raise it as “I found a bit of plastic in X’s nappy on Friday, you might want to have a check if the toys in case he’s chewed a bit off one.”

I'm sure they'll be very professional to your face but they'll laugh about how ridiculous you are once you've gone. Then you'll always be 'that' parent.

There absolutely 0 proof he got it from nursery. These things happen with most children, they put everything in their mouths!
