Why is nursery so expensive??
Ok, so not really a question but more of a moan! I understand all the overheads etc ... but for TWO MORNINGS a week, it's costing over £500 a month Sad
We are in a rather pricey area of west London... but still... I keep thinking of all the clothes I could buy for that!!

Yeah OP my husband works abroad sometimes but we are not single parents and its offensive to real single parents to say that. You have someone contributing financially to the household, you have someone you can talk to about your day and stresses, there's another person who you know loves and wants the best for your LO even if they aren't there all the time. Stop saying you're like a single parent.

I'm not a single mum but your comments about being like one are ridiculous.

Also doesn't sound like you've looked in to your options. I worked in a preschool in London for years and it was 31.50 per morning session (not including any funding). Shorter sessions but enough time to go to the gym. Or a nanny. You could find a nanny share arrangement or something like that.

Tbf, 7 - 1 is 6 hours, so closer to a full day really.
Plus, most Nurseries don't cost that amount.
Plus, there are other options - from CMer to Mothers Help, au pair or babysitter as you are only looking for a break (which I do understand) but you could get support for less money than that.

The childcare aspect of being a single Mum is the easy part.
The having no one else to share responsibility is the hard part.

You have a husband, there is someone else contributing to bills, there is someone else to help you decide if you need to go to the doctor etc.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/03/2019 18:44

That is expensive and we’re in SW London. Are you sure you got it right. If you’re confused about who a single mum is then maybe you’re confused about the pricing too.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/03/2019 18:46

I bet it’s a stealth boast and it’s a nursery for the wealthy or something like that. Like those posh coubs - erm Maggie and Rose or something.

NCKitten · 22/03/2019 20:15

I fully understand you need a break. I agree with pp though that this is an incredible luxury (my break was going back to work) and your situation is in no way comparable to that of a single mum. It's also a choice to live in (an expensive part of London) and to set up your own business.

My husband works 6am to 10 am 5 days a week, 7 to 6 on Saturday and If we are lucky a weekend starts at 5pm Sunday your very lucky to afford a clothes allowance let alone a break I crawl into bed at 8pm and back out at 6 if I get a lie in If you can think of wasting that much money on a break cant he reduce his hours or book holiday.
Some people have no choice but pay and work 2 kids and no job is a doddle.

Yesmarypoppins · 30/03/2019 20:25

A lot of people tend to think that because us Nursery workers are paid such dire wages anyway, the fees should be much less. However, you need to remember your fees also cover:
Rent of the building
Utility bills
Insurance
Food
Cleaning materials
Baby wipes/nappy bags etc
Resources
Furnishings
Guest teachers/extra activities

It’s pricey so that we can keep our heads above water.
