DS keeps ending up in accident book - supervision problem????????????

I'd really, really appreciate someone's opinion on this please. My DS is 15 months old and goes to nursery 3 - 4 days per week. He's just started walking 2 weeks ago.

Last week he was in the accident book every single day, which is understandable since he is just learning to walk. But this week he was in the accident book 3 times on one day alone. Is this excessive? I ended up picking him up early when they phoned to tell me he had a black eye only to find that by the time I arrived at nursery 20 minutes later, he'd had yet another accident. Am I being paranoid or do I maybe need to ask them to keep a much closer eye on him?

What do you think?

My DS is 13 months and also at nursery. he has been there 7 months and been in the accident book twice (fell onto a toy and bruised his cheek, and fell and bit his lip)

Do you have any worries about the nursery in general? Do they have the correct staffing ratios at all times? 3 times seems a lot in one day - is he in a room with much older, more confident children that might be a bit boisterous for him?

The room that your son is in should be childproofed IYSWIM so an accident should be just that - ie something that could have happened at anytime

The staff are really lovely and there always seems to be enough of them (3 to 1). He always seems happy enough when we drop him off.

My only other niggle with the nursery was a couple of weeks ago when I turned up early and found ds being physically removed from a situation by a rather exasperated member of staff. When I asked what was going on was given a reasonable explanation. And I know he can be a handful - but surely they have to expect that? He is only 15 months after all. Mischief is what he does.

Maybe I am just being paranoid.

Depends on the nature of the accident, I think. The black eye is obviously not a minor incident, but what about the others?

If they are recording every single incident, no matter how slight, then it's entirely possible that it's just the fact he's newly mobile, and it will settle down as he finds his feet.

If they aren't minor accidents then maybe they aren't supervising closely enough.

The physical removal - what are you objecting to? The removal or the exasperation? I'd say the removal is acceptable, the exasperation less so - but possibly understandable.

Yes - toddlers need to be free to explore
don't think you are being paranoid about your DS being a permanent fixture in the accident book
have you spoken to the manager about this - i really would if i were you

how did you feel about them physically moving your son??? Was it a bit rough or not?

It sounds like an age thing rather than a problem with the nursery. My dd is a similar age and has just as many accidents while at home with me. Your ds is too young for explanations to make much difference so removing him from the situation sounds like a reasonable thing to do. Obviously it would be different if they were picking him up roughly.

Ds was like this when he first started walking. He only had a couple of bad falls - split his lip once - and the rest were generally just bumps on his head. Think it's part of the territory tbh...

jackie2kids · 05/07/2007 15:35

It'll probably settle down.

some children have more accidents than others.

we have a child who only comes once a week, without fail he has an accident each time. mostly minor (but we do advise all accidents)
think its just the way he is.
apparantly at his last nursery he didnt have as many accidents (however the nursery didnt always tell mum about his accidents) I know this from someone else.

So I would say give it a few weeks and see if it settles down.

dd is constantly having accidents at nursery. TBH I'm always suprised at how minor the incidents are that they write down - if those things had happened at home I probably wouldn't really have noticed or done anything. dd hasn't been walking long so the falling over is no suprise really. She also goes up to children and bear hugs them, so I expect a few scratches and knocks from them pushing her off them.

What type of accidents are they?

fairyflipflop · 07/07/2007 19:11

Thanks everyone for your messages. Been watching him carefully over the past few days while he's been at home with me and if we had an accident book at home, he would be in it!! At least the nursery are telling us about these accidents. Better that than them hiding them.

Going to suggest to the manager that they keep a closer eye on him though, just until he's a bit steadier on his feet. And suggest that they need to rearrange the furniture a little, so that it poses less of a trip hazard. Hopefully that will help!

I agree 3 times in one day is excessive but if they are a nursery who inform parents of every single little knock or bump then fair play to them. I too would speak to the manager about it and see what he/she says. With regard to moving the furniture, it may be positioned in such a way that the younger children can use it for support when pulling themselves to standing or for cruising.

Good luck
