Nursery leaving DC soaking and soiled

Hi all

I’d appreciate any advice on nursery care situation.

My son (2y5m) recently moved up a room (no problems in younger room!), then almost every time I pick him up he is soaked from playing in the water tray and usually has a soiled nappy. He is always running around outside so I appreciate that a staff member might not have noticed but isn’t that what we pay them for? I’m getting concerned as the weather gets colder it will start to be really uncomfortable for him. They have spares, which he occasionally gets put in.

So I’m wondering if this is normal for nurseries and 2y olds getting messy and I’m overreacting, or if they are being neglectful not trying to keep him dry / changing his nappy.

In terms of moving him, the wait lists are 12-18m around here so it’s this or nothing. I’m self employed so can pack in work if needed I’d just rather not!

Has anyone raised concerns with nurseries and had it improve?

Thank you!

not so long ago my DD had a soiled nappy almost every time i picked her up from nursery (She's only there two half days a week). She does tend to do a poo just after lunch, so i can believe that they were recent and not noticed poos, but it happened so many times in a row that i eventually phoned them and told them it wasn't on. No problems since (she's potty trained now, but i don't think we had another incident like that ever again), and the staff always made a point of telling me when she'd last been changed and that she'd been checked. A polite word should do the job OP.

I had this, Just tell them that you have noticed your son having a soiled nappy on pick up.

It might be a mistake give them the benefit of the doubt, if it carries on happening, take it further ☺️

I work with two year olds and a soiled nappy isn't acceptable. You need to tell them. Wet nappies can sometimes go unnoticed if they have baggy trousers on. But if they're there for a full day then they should be checked and changed. Keeping two year olds clean is hard. But if he's getting wet outside then they should change him into something dry once inside

Thank you both! I’m just worried about making it awkward! I will try and raise it gently.

Yes, they will (and most definitely should) be getting messy at that age. You ought to provide spare clothes rather than rely on nursery spares.

Soiling could be a lack of attention from the staff, so mention it. It’s far better to build good communication with your child 's carers than bring problems to a message board in the first instance.

It’s just possible they may be soiling just before you collect. A lot of children arrive at childcare with a dirty nappy: that doesn’t necessarily mean mums are neglecting them either.

Could you send one of those all in one waterproofs for when he's playing outside, he'd be nice and dry then.

nutellanom · 22/10/2018 22:35

Re the soiling, my son has similar when he moved rooms. I think he would poo just before I collected him when they were outside in the garden so no one noticed. I just started checking him when I got to Nursery and letting them know he had done a poo. They changed him there. I think they then started being more proactive with checking and we haven't had this issue since.

In the playschool my son attends, they sign the nappies when they change them.

I would mention it (nicely) that he has been sent home soiled; wouldn't mind grubby clothes but I wouldn't like a child wet and chilly either.

Tumbleweed101 · 02/12/2018 09:11

Being in a soiled nappy is a concern but being wet/grubby from playing is normal. Some get soaked in seconds when there’s a water tray about. Make sure you put in plenty of spare clothes in so there is no reason for them to delay putting on something dry. The nursery spare clothes vanish quickly when parents don’t bring them straight back so there may not be spare clothes to hand when needed.

A dirty nappy regularly on collection means staff aren't monitoring enough. I would talk to someone there and say its been frequent, and you would like him changed more often

the wetness from outdoor playing i wouldn't mind, but i would expect staff to use the waterproof coat i provide so the coat is wet but child is warm
