dd usually gets changed 3 times a day (8am-6pm), which is more that she gets changed at home . One day she had 5 nappies in a day though!!!

Bit hard to guess whats right though, depends how much your little one wees and poos.

1dilemma · 30/05/2007 09:27

Thanks wj do they change all of them eery so often or just when needed. I'll come clean and say that I discovered that my nursery changes all the lo 5 times a day!!! And was very ed no wonder our landfils are full. (that's 5 times between 9-5)

Sounds rather excessive to me, I don't think nappies should need changing more than 2/3 times between 9-5pm tbh.

loler · 30/05/2007 09:42

Sounds far too often! I guess they are worried about being told that they are leaving babies in wet nappies.

DS get changed about 3 times a day 8.30 - 5.00. Plus if he poos may get another one - have started using cloth nappies and am finding it's saving a fortune.

I think I would definatley ask them why their policy is to change so often.

Washersaurus · 30/05/2007 09:57

DS' nursery have a policy to check/change nappies every 2/3 hours, sometimes they leave them much longer though which I'm not very happy about (but we use cloth nappies). I would say that 4-5 nappies in a nursery day is about the norm for my DS.

BikeBug · 30/05/2007 10:01

3 times between 9 and 5, unless ds is asleep at one of the nappy-change times. More than he gets at home some days

nurseryvoice · 30/05/2007 18:30

First when you said 5 nappies, I thought whats wrong with that, but then if you actually think about timings.
IF the child arrives at 8 with a clean dry nappy then:

1change around 1030 if needed
2before lunch if wet/dirty (as not nice to sit to eat with a dirty/wet nappy)
3 change before go down for a sleep if didnt get changed before
4. change upon waking if need it (as a lot of babies wet whilst they are sleeping)

change mid afternoon if not changed earlier
change before they go home as you NEVER send a child home in a wet nappy.
change around 5 ish if not changed mid afternoon.

so in total that is on average 3 nappies a day.
so it depends on individual child for timings but on the whole 3 nappies a day. 1 am 1 pm 1 after lunch..

sorry this is a bit rambling.

Ceebee74 · 30/05/2007 18:35

My nursery seems the same as most of these - on a normal day, 3 times a day. They will change DS as soon as he has had a poo so if he is having a bad day in this department, it can be up to 5.

ruddynorah · 30/05/2007 18:38

she's there 1pm til half 4. she's routinely changed at 4pm after tea.

nappyaddict · 30/05/2007 18:43

if i changed at 10:30 i wouldnt then change before lunch unless dirty.
i change ds about every 4 hours unless dirty.

1dilemma · 30/05/2007 20:18

So the general concensus seems to be about 3 times a day is enough? (obv. I would expect them to change in addition if poo). I worked out if it takes 1 hr to catch/change and write about it for all the children that's 5 hours 1 person is spending changing nappies add in breaks and bottle making and 1 person has no time to interact with the children at all. I think I'm going to have to say something just wondering how.....
This is not considering the fact that 350 nappies a week are going into landfill, when they are charged for the rubbish our fees will jump!

My understanding is that babies should not be changed routinely

Nappy changing time is now obselete

Nappies should be changed as and when babies wee/poo

This is due to Birth to Three which is the current framework

Early Years Foundation Stage is the newest framework - and that would support the nappy changing ethos/method I have described

I never change a baby who doesn't need changing - but neither do I let them sit in pee

HTH

preggerspoppet · 30/05/2007 20:44

you know the answer 1dilemma, go for cloth bots!

1dilemma · 30/05/2007 20:45

Katymac fab thanks I was hoping you/bubble or nurseyjo would see this. Do you have any idea where I can suggest the nursery look to see this in writing so to speak? Also when you say sit in pee what do you mean? I'm talking the baby room here so I guess they 'dribble' a bit out most of the time . In practice for an average non frequent pooer how mamy times do you reckon you would change them in a day? I'm also thinking what a grim day for the staff to do all those nappies day in day out (part and parcel of the job I know but one of them told me 'oh yeah even if they are virtually dry we still change them.'
Thanks

pp I have taken the plunge myself and can feel myself getting hooked in to all those rainbow bots and fleece boosters trouble is I can barely understand what everyone is on about . I'm wondering whether as everyone gets more eco wise nurseries will go over to cloth nappies more. My next plan will be to get them to keep the door shut in the Winter the heating bill must be HORRENDOUS (not a security issue it's an office door into secure playground)

...far more often than I used to I seem to recall. I'd send in 4-5 nappies and they'd be used - would get through 3 - 4 in the same period of time at home.

Washersaurus · 30/05/2007 20:57

Last week I sent DS in to nursery with 5 washable nappies in his bag, and when I picked him up they had run out and he had a stinky bum! He does poo an awful lot some days though

It's in Birth to Three (which is the most important document for the under 3's)

Umm - I change them when they squidge iyswim

Never change a dribble (well apart from one child who has rampant nappy rash & I change that child hourly - she has such pain)

They are NOT allowed to close the door

It has been sent down from on high (except you say it's an office door - it's the children's access that needs to be open)

ruddynorah · 30/05/2007 21:00

katymac- dd routinely poos after her tea so they do routinely change her after tea. but yes, they have said they have stopped doing 'routine' nappy changes. when she first started nappy change times were every 3 hours i think.

Katymac · 30/05/2007 21:04

But that is the child's rountine - not the nurseries iyswim

1dilemma · 30/05/2007 21:14

Right guys you have given me the shove I needed to tackle this Wish me luck!! and thanks

I run a nursery and we change the ones in nappies at 10am, 1.30pm and 4.15pm (we're open 8.30-5). We also change them if they are very wet between these times or of course if they are dirty.
