First Day Disaster

Hi

My 10 month old started nursery today and it didn't go well at all. Dropped him off at 8am and they called me at 11 to say he hadn't stopped crying since I left and was getting himself more and more worked up. I left it 40 mins and when I called back they said he was no better and thought it'd be best if I came and got him.

He has had some settling in sessions although not as many as planned due to dh's gran dying and having to travel away for a funeral last week.

All the posts i've read seem to say that their little one's were ok after 10 mins and I'm really worried about how he'll get on tomorrow. Boss has been really good and has said I can have a half day but it still means he'll be in for about 5 hours.

I'd reallly appreciate your experiences of how your lo's settled, especially if they were really upset at first.

Thanks x

Oh, poor mite. My DS started nursery at 9 months and he settled quite well, although he did cry at the beginning. It's a difficult age around that time, separation anxiety and all. I think it's good that the nursery phoned you and I'm sure your boss will give you time off work earlier if need be. The beginning is really, really tough.

Slightly different situation, but I am cm and had a new 8 mth old start with me just before christmas. She did cry an awful lot to start with, in fact she cried everytime I looked at her! I was able to feed her and look after her, but if I looked at her and talked to her it was not good. Slowly, but surely it did get better and within 3 or 4 days she was perfectly happy. It was heartbreaking for mum, I know, but we stayed strong and she is very happy to be with me now.

My friends DD struggled to settle in to her nursery (aged 1) and was called back several times. My friend took an extra week off tp give her DD some more time to help settle in. My firends DD goes to the same nursery as my DD and has now settles but it did take longer than expected. She is doing really well now.

How did today go?

Angelsus · 03/04/2007 20:33

Thanks for all your messages. Today went a little bit better, he still cried for most of the session but apparently there were moments when he played! He's managing to eat and sleep which is good so hopefully he'll settle in soon.

I'm not working tomorrow so he's getting a day off and then will be in for another half day on thursday. He's not crying when I leave him but seems to start once I'm out of sight.

Do you say good-bye to him when you leave? I know opinions are divided on this. I always used to say "bye-bye" and "mummy will be back".

Enjoy tomorrow and good luck on Thursday.
