Bottle Feeding at Nursery

NewbieMumSoph · 26/03/2007 13:19

I have just come back from collecting my 6 month old from his last settling in period at the nursery. I had taken a bottle of boiled water and a seperate container with the dried milk as I understood you were not allowed to pre mix them any more.
Anyway the nursery have asked me to bring the bottles already made up and they will warm them up as and when needed...Is this right? Should I be concerned?! I exclusively breastfed for the 1st 5 months so am by no means a bottle feeding expert and have just been going on what other people tell me. The nursery say that they have always used pre mixed bottles and it's never done the children any harm so they are choosing not to follow the new rule! Also it would take up too much of their time having to mix the bottles for every baby each time they need a feed...even though I gave them the correct amount of milk to the amount of water in the bottle so no measuring out would be needed just put it in and mix it together!
Should I just go along with what they say or fight for what I believe! I start back at work tomorrow and don't want to cause myself or the nursery unneccessary stress! Please help...

you need to be happy leaving your child there and if it is a good nursery they will do what is right for you and your child. my ds had a dairy intolerance and his nursery would prepare seperate meals for him at no extra charge, they also have children in terry nappies and have sent staff on training to learn how to do them!

As long as they keep the milk in a fridge until needed and then warm it up well, not in a microwave, I don't think it should be a problem. I don't have experience of this, though, I take cow's milk for DD (she's 2) and DS used to get formula provided from the nursery.

Hi Soph - I know the guidelines are that you aren't meant to make formula up in advance anymore - but my DS has been ff since birth (he is now 8mo) and I have always made all his bottles up in an evening and stored them in the fridge - and he has been ok. I take the bottles out of the fridge just before I leave home in the mornings and the nursery put them straight in the fridge when I get there.

Not sure about the nursery's policy as I have always had bottles ready-made so it has never been an issue

But, if you feel uncomfortable going against the guidelines, then the nursery should go along with your wishes - as you say, it would take about 30 seconds more to mix it (plus presumably less time to warm up as it is already room temperature rather than fridge temperature).

The alternative is to provide ready made milk in a carton if you like.

The guidelines are more relevant to babies less than a month old if the helps.

the guidance for preparing formula feeds in nursery setting is here

Bottles can be pre made but as close as possible to time of going to nursery.
