Permission to swaddle/wrap baby

My 7 month old DS is starting nursery on Monday. At a visit this week we have been asked to complete a form. Mainly very standard stuff: allergies, what his routine is, etc. However, there is a section asking permission to wrap him with one arm out during sleep time. I'm not keen due to SIDS risk and also because even as a small baby he hated being swaddled and used a sleeping bag from 4 weeks. However, these are experienced staff who know what they're doing and if it helps them should I just say yes? I've already highlighted myself as an anxious mother I think!!

Not at all

If you wouldn't do it yourself say no

Isn't 7 months too old for swaddling?"??

JennyBlueWren · 15/01/2015 20:41

Write on it that he hates being swaddled and uses a sleeping bag. They probably want to know what works best for him.

How odd, neither of mine have ever been swaddled and I'd have been very surprised if a nursery wanted to swaddle at 7 months.

Maybe the question is more if your baby is swaddled we will do it but with one arm out?

I would just clarify that you will be sending in a sleeping bag for your baby.

Thanks for the quick replies. They say because the nursery is noisy kids can startle which wakes them, so if permitted they wrap/swaddle all babies with one arm free. This is the baby room, so babies up to 12 months go there.

I've just started swaddling my six month old DD as she was sleeping badly but would only ever do it when she was in her crib with the movement sensor on or if I was watching her closely. If you don't feel comfortable then don't give permission.

BMO · 15/01/2015 21:07

Are they not in a separate sleep room? How many babies do they have?

Lazybones80 · 16/01/2015 01:20

11 babies. Yes they sleep in a separate room, but it's right next to the main room

They are asking your permission. It's fine to say no. You don't have to have any reason other than it isn't how you've done it with your baby up until now. Smile

Pico2 · 16/01/2015 01:30

I'd say no. 7 months is very old to swaddle.

insancerre · 16/01/2015 06:14

Just say no
I don't understand how having one arm restrained stops babies from being woken up by noise

chelsbells · 16/01/2015 12:29

Just say that you will be providing him with a sleepbag for bed time and would prefer for him to not be swaddled to sleep.

I work in a nursery and some children do wake up when others cry, but normally all it takes to get them back to sleep is rubbing their back or forehead and they drop back off, no need to be getting them out of their cots to swaddle back to sleep.

Lazybones80 · 16/01/2015 19:24

Thanks for all the replies. I'll pack his sleeping bag and say no to swaddling. If he's waking repeatedly I'm sure they'll tell me.
