Would you go for half a day to settle or would you just put them in for a full day?

do you mean just one (half or full) day?

Donbean · 20/07/2006 14:10

Yes just one full day, from a half day.
I feel terribly guilty for thinking of putting him in for a full day. He is only just 3 but this will be the 12 months leading to full time school.

Won't you ahve to pay for the other half of the day I thought they were only allowed 5 half days in preschool? or is it a private one?

Mine is going to a church run nursery for 4hr session one day a week now (aged2.7), increasing to 2 days of 4hrs in Sep/Oct (not earlier because we cant really afford it), then he starts state nursery in January, which is 2.5hrs every afternoon.

dd2 was one month away from being 3 when she started and did a term of 4 afternoons.

Then went to 5 mornings and has only just started staying full days.

But she is quite quiet, sensitive and cautious so full days were out of the question.

I would go for mornings rather than afternoons if you can as I think that fact she was tired made her more reticent.

dd1

Donbean · 20/07/2006 14:23

No, you get 5 free sessions of 2.5hrs a week dont you.I didnt think that there wer restrictions on this???? Will ask them.
At present i pay, but from Sept it will be free.
He starts this new one then for 2.5hrs. I want to put him in for the whole day to prepare him for school.
Think i will stick to origional plan and put him in for half a day at first, i could increase it before Sept if he seems ready,

yes put him in for the whole day .. but don't kid yourself its to prepare him for school .. take the time and do something for yourself

I think preparation for school would probaby be better 5 x 2.5 hour sessions Mon to Fri actually .. then you get in a rhythm

but whatever .. he'll have a great time

bundle · 20/07/2006 14:27

whole day definitely in fact would go for more than one day as it's a long time in a child's life (a week) to think forward to the next time they're in nursery/wherever.

LucyJones · 20/07/2006 14:27

at our nursery the 2.5 sessions five days a week have to be taken in separate sessions. So if you want them to go in for a full day you either have to take them home at lunchtime and bring them back in the pm or pay for the middle bit I think. Very confusing

anthonykiedisbitontheside · 20/07/2006 16:26

Yeah ours is 2.5 hrs a day either all mornings or afternoons so they won't let you take them for 2 sessions a day iyswim.

Donbean · 20/07/2006 16:44

I asked and i can put him in for the whole day, send a packed lunch and it is still classed as the free sessions.
He will also be going to play school for 3 seperate sessions in the week so it wont be too long in between.
Still feel VERY VERY guilty about this though.
He isnt going for my convenience, for work or whatever, he is going because he needs all the stimulation etc etc that these things can offer.
See, im rattling on and on to make myself feel better.

My dd starts preschool in sept and she will end up doing 5x 2.5 hours a week. At the beginning though they ease them into it by the first day only being an hour session, then they go in the next week for 2x 2.5 hr sessions, then the next week is every other day so by four weeks they will start everyday. Easing them in gradually could be the way to go however as your ds has been to nursery previously he will probably quite used to it by now so I wouldn't worry, do whatever works best for you both.
