Been called for jury service but ds only part time at nursery

Not really sure how to handle it. They've deferred it for a few months until March as I'm still breastfeeding but hope to wean him by then . It means I can be reasoanbly sure I won't be available to look after DS for the second half of March at all.

DS likes nursery but he only goes 3 days a week at the moment. One option (which would be expensive) would be to ask the nursery to take him full time for those 2 weeks.

Just wondering if anyone has any views on this as an option? Has anyone else been put in this situation? On the upside if I talk to nursery on Tuesday when he next goes I'm giving lots of warning. Its not as if I can say no either.

Really stumped. Work arent going to be best impressed either and what if I get a long trial? All bright ideas gratefully accepted :)

Will the court pay the increased childcare costs?

Have you tried appealing? DP has been excused twice on childcare grounds.

Really Jane? I may try that. I don't understand how the system works. I will talk to nursery first. We could afford the extra fees though obviously would prefer not to but will definately consider an appeal

Just cast my mind back. He was called initially in term time so had it deferred because impractical to miss lectures (medical student). It was deferred to the summer holiday when he was looking after DC so he wrote outlining difficulty in finding extra childcare, problem settling them etc. was excused.

I've just had a quick google but can't see anything to say that childcare difficulties are a reason not to do jury service.

It looks as though if you have been deferred once, you are expected to do it within the year. I think I would just get it over with if I were you, if you are able to have childcare arrangements in place. There is no perfect time.

They'll pay your expenses, so that might cover the extra childcare you need. In fact checking the website here and they definitely will, as well as travel and food.

My DM did jury service when my sister and I were little - it was a right PITA for her with childcare (we were passed to various neighbours for 2 weeks!). When she turned up the courts people asked her why she hadn't asked to be excused as apparently they would have let her off so if it's really difficult for you there's no harm in asking . I managed to be excused once as I received a summons whilst I was a student living 200 miles away from the court - I couldn't guarantee when I was going to be "home" for the 2 weeks so I couldn't defer, they tend to be quite understanding.

i did jury service a few years ago, before i had DS luckily. If its still the same they do reimburse costs such as loss of earnings, food, travel etc however there is a maximum they will pay which when i did it was about £50 a day. My daily rate at work is more than this so i lost out. Work have to give you the time off but they don't have to pay you and you find that unless you work in public sector you won't get paid.

I got off as I am a single parent and no way I could have organised childcare and got to court on time. I did it before when I was young so don't feel too guilty!
