Potty training at nursery - how much progress do they need to have made before you send them with no nappies?

Do you think you can send them with no nappies on day one? Do they have to have used a potty a certain number of times? Would you wait until they were only having the odd accident?

DS (2.8) is just starting potty training and goes to nursery three days a week. He isn't that enthusiastic about using the potty. He will sit on it, but has only really properly used it once. I think that going cold turkey on nappies would help him to convince him that using a potty is in his interests. However, I can't guarantee that he will made much progress in the 4 days that he is at home. Is it fair (on him and the nursery staff) to just send him without nappies on day 5? I know I will have to discuss this with his carers, but am interested in other people's opinions.

Hi

Personally i think it depends on what the nursery is like,my dd only goes to nursery one afternoon a week but they were happy to carry on what she was doing at home, she did have an accident but they were fine about it, and i have found that if she sees other kids using potty then she wants to be like them. hth

Talk to the staff at your Sons nusery. I do regular supply work at a nusery and the policty there is they do what the parents want. Some parents want their child to try the potty at each nappy cahnge, some put them into pull ups and others send them in pants straight away.
It's hard work on staff but good staff won't mind. Send in plenty of spare clothes.

I think it depends on how willing you are to wash dirty knickers each night!

I did exactly what you describe - twice (DS and DD). DS was 2.2 and DD just 2 so both youngish. I started training on a Friday, stayed in over the weekend and then sent them to nursery in pants (with loads of changes of clothes) on the Tuesday (so day 5). And yes I did have dirty/wet clothes to wash at the end of the day.
