Hi im currently doing my dissertion on parents perceptions of male staff, i currently work in an afterschool care setting with one male member of staff.

My organisation also has a nursery with 3 male staff.

looking for opinions on how you would feel about male staff caring for your child, also if there is a change in opionion for male teachers in primary and secondary education. My dissertation is looking to see if location, class, sexuality, age, marritial status and how many children you have changes opinions, pm me if you do not want to disclose these publicly.

Im also struggling to find previous research that has been carried out if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, my son's nursery has a male career in one of the rooms, he's great. Do you have a survey monkey survey or anything? Or do you want to post some questions? Happy to answer.

FrumpyPumpy · 23/10/2012 13:13

Just realised you've aske us to pm you... Will do

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have- there is 1 male caregiver at my ds's nursery. For some reason I'm not great at using this app on my iPhone- so if you could message me the questions I'll type back a response on my laptop tonight.

feonamac · 23/10/2012 13:43

ive not conducted the survey yet, was just looking to see a general opinon just now about how they feel leaving your child with a male working, what was your first thought were you vary at first? etc

My first impression was more surprise at there being a male member of staff (not in a bad way- but everyone else there is female!)- DH seemed more wary but happy enough when he saw how much my DS seemed to adore him!

GetAllTheThings · 23/10/2012 14:02

OP there is a thread here which gives a recent over view of MN'ers views on male nursery staff and childminders. Possibly helpful....

TiggyD · 23/10/2012 19:50

According to a survey by the major providers group, men make up 2% of their nurseries' workforce and 98% of parents are in favour of men.

ThingsThatGoBumpInTheNight · 24/10/2012 19:50

I think it would be a fab idea to have more male staff it would give children a good role model for one thing from a very early age especially those without a positive male role model in the family

sanam2010 · 04/11/2012 22:15

My dd's nursery has a male carer in every room. I think it's great and they're fantastic (as are the female carers!). I really like the carer in DD's room, we even have him as a babysitter for DD as he knows her so well. Children have fathers so why shouldn't they have a male carer in nursery?

feonamac · 10/11/2012 14:23

do your opionons change when things like the saville case occur?

The is a male nursery worker at ds's nursery. He's great. Wish he had been there when dd was. I would like to see more men in nursery and primary schools.

Location - Scotland
Class - em, not sure, have a Professional job.
Sexuality - straight
Age - 36
Marital status - married (but wasn't when dd was at nursery and feelings haven't changed).

Yama · 10/11/2012 14:29

There

ReallyTired · 10/11/2012 15:37

"do your opionons change when things like the saville case occur? "

As far as I know Jimmy Saville never worked as a nursery nurse

Some paedophiles are women, there were couple of women who worked in a nursery in Portmouth some years back who abused children. Anyway male nursery nurses are CRB checked.

Dd's private nursery had three men of varying ages. One was a young apprentice, another was in his late forties and the other one was in his twenties. All of them are effective at their jobs, which is the most important thing.

QuietNinjaTardis · 10/11/2012 15:41

Ds nursery have a male nursery nurse. He's fab with the kids. Was a bit surprised when he started purely because he was the first guy and all the rest are girls. Jimmy Saville has never worked at my ds nursery so no not worried.

Wolfiefan · 10/11/2012 15:44

My DD's nursery has a male worker. He is great. Professional and caring. I don't care whether the people who look after my kids are male or female. I care about how well they do the job.

CommanderShepard · 22/11/2012 13:26

I have no problem with male carers whatsoever. Never have done.

Oxfordshire, professional, heterosexual, 30, married.

No, the Jimmy Savile case doesn't change my feelings. Vanessa George, for example, was not a man.

meninchildcaregroup.moonfruit.com/#/useful-links/4569541629 Have a look at the report by Heather Rolfe. Plenty there for you.

You can also sear Mumsnet for previous thread. There's currently one in the Feminist section about nurseries who have pink uniforms. Highlights include:
"Unfortunately the vast majority of sexual abusers are men, so ensuring minimal unsupervised contact with men seems reasonable to me."
"The main risk factor is the carer of the child being male, so it makes a certain amount of sense to reduce the risk by reducing the opportunity for a male carer to have sole charge of a child."
It tends to be those found on the feminist boards who argue strongest against equality. Funny old world.

fledtoscotland · 25/11/2012 23:54

There's a man working at DS's nursery. The children love him and he's very patient. He's got a steady girlfriend and seems to genuinely care about the children.

TiggyD · 26/11/2012 17:12

Why is "A steady girlfriend" relevant Fled?

Is not having a steady girlfriend a sign of something?

fledtoscotland · 26/11/2012 17:20

It was mentioned upthread. No concern of mine as long as he's good at his job.

TiggyD · 26/11/2012 17:23

Ahhh, Ok.

Carry on.
