Concerns about nursery

I've recently gone back to work and my 9 month DS has started going to nursery for 3 half days a week. This is his first week. He cries whenever I leave him and pick him up, which I take as him just needing time to settle in and the ladies who work there say he is slowly getting better during the days. He's only there for 4 hours max at a time.

However, last night I went to collect him and he was sitting on the floor on his own crying. I went over and picked him up and he had scratches all down one side of his face. There were no other babies nearby who could have done this. I asked the lady who was near him what had happened and she just shrugged and called another girl over and asked her. This lady said he had been rolling around on a mat and maybe scratched himself on some velcro. This is very believable and is probably what happened however shouldn't the staff have noticed this before I pointed it out to them?

I really want to think that my DS is being well cared for but walking in on him crying by himself with bright red obvious scratches that noone has noticed has made me concerned. I don't want to overreact as I know accidents happen.

I'd really like some advice on whether this sounds wrong or not??!

Also I'm aware of the 1-3 ratio, sometimes when I go in the room there seems to be many more babies to people (I guess while staff prepare drinks/do nappies etc) does anyone know the exact rules on this?

This must have been horrible for you. I don't know of the exact rules or what the ratio is (it will be online), but I'm pretty sure a child (particularly a young baby) should not be left unattended at any time. I'm also a bit surprised that a nursery has mats with Velcro of that type that can scratch a baby's face.

My advice would be to have a harsh word with the nursery manager. The worst that can happen is that they take a little extra care with him. Best to highlight your displeasure early and stop it from happening again.

Ratio for under 2's is 1:3, I would be a little worried that no one noticed quite obvious markings, also velcro on mats that is hard enough to scratch should not really be in a baby room, I know some mats have velcro sensory fabrics that can be removed but these types of velcro tend to be a lot softer ie: suitable for young babies. Does the nursery have cctv, could you ask to have a look and see where the marks came from?

I would also discuss your worries with your dc's key worker and see what the response is.

I would also discuss your worries with the manager, accidents happen but I would be cross they hadn't noticed it. Why was he just sitting there crying how awful for you :( hopefully the manager can put your mind at rest! X
