My 14mo ds hasn't been well since 3rd of January - I'm considering giving up work

My ds has been going to nursery since he was 8mo old. He seemed to catch everything that goes around in the nursery. I'm off from work at least one week a months if not more. I'm so sick of him being ill, I'm seriously considering giving up work and take him out of nursery.

I've been telling myself that if he gets everything now, he won't get it when he goes to school, but it's not much help when he is so unwell all the time. And I'm also worried that I would loose my job being off so much.

How long can it go on? Will he ever builds up immunity against all the illnesses? It seem to be so many around.

Bugs do go round in nurseries but personally I would be questioning the hygiene levels if he really is ill that often! What do you class as ill in a having to stay off sort of way?

January and February: He had high temperature twice, couple of colds, viral throat infection, and at the moment it's sickness and diarrhoea but that was from my dh.

In the past few months: slapped cheek, more sickness and diarrhoea + secondary infection (so he is lactose intolerant), more high temperature due to some sort of viral infections.

Are you taking time off for all of them? Can your DP take some time off? To be honest unless mind are really sick, eg D&V I send them in.

My eldest DD was like this untill she was 4 every few weeks she would start running a temp and tonsils would swell, i spent loads of time in and out of work luckily they were understanding. When she was 4 they took her tonsils out and shes been fine since.

Also we gave her vitamins. It does seem that your poor ds has been through the mill though bless him.

Id maybe speak to the doc see if vitamins would help or see if there is anything they can suggest, my dd was prem so seemed to take forever to get a immune system.

My DS was like this last winter when he was a similar age to yours. Fortunately he's been pretty good this year. It's just down to mixing with other kids who have siblings in school etc. He'll get more resistant I'm sure and once the spring is here there'll be a big difference.

so it is his first winter in nursery?
unfortunately it sounds pretty normal to me.
do you have a dp/dh who can stay home with him ? it would only be fair to share this sickness-of-child leave.

in the meantime you can give multivitamins, go outside with him at leat one hour every day (at least at the weekends), air his bedroom before sleeptime, let him have enough sleep.

it will get better, spring is on its way.

I don't always take time off if he has cold, he can go to nursery, unless he has temperature or he is sick. Otherwise I would never go to work. My dh stayed at home with him last time, but his boss not as understanding as mine.
