Moving up to the next room already?!

DD has been at nursery since age 7mo, 3 days a week, when she was 11mo they wanted her moved to the next room up.

It had taken her a while to settle so I was a bit upset at her moving but agreed as they said she knew the staff and would take her on visits to the room before moving her.

She went on one visit and then moved the next week.

She became upset again when I took her in and has taken quite a long time to settle, now only two months later they want her to move rooms again Shock.

I don't think this is fair on her to move her about like this and I know that the reason they are is to create more spaces in the baby rooms, not because it is right for her.

AIBU to have a word about this? Want to put my foot down and tell them it's not really on. Is it something I should speak to the manager about?

Am afraid I've brought it on myself by choosing a large national chain nursery who are completely profit driven!

I think you should take it up with the manager. If your not happy with the amount of movement you need to let them know i don't understand why they have moved her so much in so many months. i work in a nursery and we only move children when they are ready and parents are always asked before we do it. Its no wonder she is getting upset when you drop off babies need consistency and she is clearly not getting it. Im a mum of two aswell and would feel very upset if i was in your shoes.
Hope you get it sorted.

My son also started at 7 months and does 3 days. He is being integrated into the toddler room, totally at his own pace from this week. He is 17mo. I would complain if I were you.

Thanks for your replies. On enquiring further I found out they just wanted to start visits to the next room now and she wouldn't actually start in there till Jan next year as they might miss out on visits otherwise because of Christmas etc.

I still feel this is a little rushed though as this means she would have had just over 4 months in her current room, this was something I didn't really consider when choosing a larger nursery - that the age ranges in the rooms were actually quite small so it means moving more regularly. Will try to make sure she has plenty of visits to get used to the new staff and get them to delay the move as much as possible.

Yes, that is the problem with large nurseries - I worked in one that had four age groups just in the under-2s unit, so children had a new room and new staff every few months. Totally went against the spirit of the EYFS and the keyworker system imo, in that babies need stability and to be able to form close relationships with consistent adults.

Doesn't seem right. Babies need consistency and time to get to know staff. It's all rushed, especially as it takes time for her to settle. Surely they should move when they are ready, not based on their timetable.

My DS was 9 months when he started nursery and went up to his new room at about 18months. By that time, he was so ready for further development, not playing with babies. He will stay there until about 2 1/2, then go up to next room for a year or so until the pre school room.

3 or 4 rooms in a nursery is fine.

  1. Floor babies.
  2. Toddler babies.
  3. The tantrum room.
  4. Pre-schoolers.

Grin The tantrum room ....

The nursery may have a policy on managing transitions. Ask if they do.

What are the age ranges in your nursery seems odd that she is moving again so soon - I have worked in nurseries where they only do 0-1,1-2,2-3,3-5
