DS is 9 months old and has been going to nursery 2 days a week for about two months.he hasn't really settled - he sobs whenever i leave him- and has now started crying whenever he sees the door to the nursery. I can visit him during the day- and the nursery encourage it - but he just gets upset when I leave. i was hoping it was normal but the nursery manager suggested today that he come for a full week as she is concerned that he takes ages to settle and it isn't a joyous time.
I just wondered if anyone had experience of this? does doing one fulltime week work? it seems harsh to upset him unnecessarily. Any tips for helping him settle- they did ask if i held him all the time at home- i don't but he is clingy after being at nursery

We have had children who do two days or less, and it does take longer to settle, we wouldn't suggest at our nursery for him to do a full week, but more to do a few more settling in days, in between his normal days. So maybe a morning, or a few hours on the other days to keep up continuity.

We also wouldn't encourage a parent to visit during the day although for little babies it wouldn't be to much of an issue, but when they are aware that mum is leaving them again, we find it is to disruptive, upsetting and confusing for the children, and doesn't generally help with them settling in.

I would suggest, giving him short days if possible, doing more settling in sessions (where you leave him) between his normal days at nursery, and maybe give him a muslin that smells of you, to help comfort him when you are not there.
