bug after bug.. when does it stop?!

DS has been at nursery for a few months now but in the last 2, it has been bug after bug, coughs and colds, upset tummy etc etc, usual stuff.
He only goes one day a week but ends up missing alternate weeks as the bug usually takes a few days to materialise and a few days to get over which coincides with his nursery day.
I am getting fed up as it is a waste of money (nearly £50/day) and also 'cos I end up getting it!

I'm wondering if others found this problem and did it get better after a bit of time? Also, do people think that there is less of a problem if you have a nanny? CMs I guess would still be an issue as there are other kids there too.
On the other hand we went with nursery for the socialisation aspect as it is one day a week and DS is an only so maybe better just to stick with it and wait for the warmer weather and hopefully less bugs?

to be honest this will go on for a while, particularly ting in this season. It will improve as we come out of the winter season, but my DD got most things going for the first 6 months or so. It is frustrating, but the way i see it, by taking him out you will only be delaying the inevitable until he goes to school anyway... I'm hoping my DD will be invincible by then Hmm

dunno where the 'ting' came from

GingerbreadGiraffe · 17/12/2010 13:54

Hang it there it gets better, but its painful.

My DD started in January last year and we had 3 months of illness hell as I called it. We were alll ill all the time. I've never had some much ongoing illness!

But now mine and DDs immunities are much better!

They have to go through it sometime so Im not sure a nanny is the answer for this one....

Good luck

I don't know when it stops! DS is in reception and during this half term, the kids in his class (him included) have had everything - tonsillitis, norovirus, flu, various coughs colds and other illnesses. DS has had so many sick days. Anwyay, DS went to nursery for 18 months before going to school, picked up bugs etc from there, but still gets all this stuff from school.

Ds seemed to have a constant cold for the first 6 months, but since then has been healthy for a year, pretty much. So you might be lucky...

Thanks, hopefully it will settle down with a bit more time and the onset of some warmer weather...... I was just getting desperate for a moment!

We're in exactly the same position. DS started nursery in October and has been ill pretty much ever since! Colds, chest infection, viral infections, tonsilitus, two lots of antibiotics...he was better for a few days last week, and then ill again last night. Yet another upper respiritary infection apparently. I'm fed up with it all and feel for my LO but I'm hoping that it will end soon. For all of us!

Same here. DS (12 mths) started nursery in august and had a cold 2 days after his first week. It's never stopped since, apart from a few days here and there. He only does 2 days a week.
I think it's just part of the whole experience.

I remember that. Send your well child to nursery. By the weekend your well child is poorly. Get them better, in time for the next week if you are lucky, and then start again the next weekend with the next illness.

First 6 months is the worst, and the second child seems to get off more likely as they have seen some of the bugs before.

GoldenGreen · 20/12/2010 12:43

It was like this for a whole year with ds, got better once he turned two, then better again now he's at school. It is very frustrating so lots of sympathy.

Mummy2Bookie · 24/12/2010 17:23

It's just part and parcel of the nursery experience. For children and staff and also parents

My 18 month old has had bug after bug since Sep 9th until Christmas Day. Miraculously nothing in the past 9 days which feels like a miracle.

And he doesn't go to nursery. It is a terrible time for everyone around here.

I was going to start him at nursery in September, and am so relieved that I didn't. Will start him Feb now and hope the worst of it is over. I feel so sorry for working mums, who must be so stressed over all this. How do you keep doing your job when your kids are continuously sick!
