Is it usual for nurseries to use cc / cio techniques at naptime?

NIE - used two nurseries over 4 years for DD and neither did this. And because of some flexibility with my work I did go into nursery at different times, inc nap times, so did see first hand.

Not in my experience, sorry

We used to sit with the toddlers and rub/pat backs until they settled, but not with younger babies. They went when they were tired.

I was worried about this but as a friend pointed out, it's not in their interest to leave babies to cry as it would wake the others. Also DD settles much more easily for them than for me - apparently this is quite common but I never believed it until I experienced it for myself!

Sometimes mums tell me s/he will cry a bit but just leave them & I put them down & sit next to the door & listen. Then I get more & more upset until I pick them up or rub their back until they sleep.

I just can't do it; even if asked to

MissBeehiving · 30/10/2010 21:14

Not in my experience OP. Why?

A good nursery will find a way to get your baby to sleep. For example my dd used to be put in an electric baby swing to make her go to sleep. Now they just rub her back and she copies all the other children.

With toddlers there is a herd effect. When the toddlers have a nap at dd nursery they all lie down together on a mat. It looks really cute.

Nope

At DS's nursery they patted or rocked the babies and toddlers

They absolutley weren't left to cry

One nursery we saw seemed keen and I was horrified and wanted to know if this was common. DD is your typical hippy bf baby :) and finds it hard to sleep without boob.

I wondered if she'd be subjected to this without my consent? (which I would never give)

Almost certainly not. I was worried about this when DD started nursery and actually wrote on the form 'please don't leave DD to cry' and the key worker said that they would never do that anyway.

When she started they used to rock and cuddle her to sleep, now they push her backwards and forwards in her pushchair.

On a couple of occasions she has had cried whilst fighting sleep (as she sometimes does at home) and they have always let me know and she has never been left crying on her own.

smellyfeet · 30/10/2010 21:32

At DD's nursery they patted or rocked the little ones to sleep.

MissBeehiving · 30/10/2010 21:37

DS won't go down without a feed, cuddle or in the buggy. At DS's nursery, we talk about sleeping and what the best strategy was/is that fits in with him.

A good nursery will not do something that you are not happy with. TBH I not sure many nurseries would go for CC unless a parent specifically requested it.

I have nearly twenty years experience of working in nurseries and have never seen controlled crying practiced.
Babies do cry obviously but most nursery nurses work quite hard to get babies and toddlers to sleep.
Caring for cranky, overtired babies is not much fun, especially when you have a room full of them.
