I run creches for local children centres and am also a childminder.
I'm aware that the most recent guidance for bottle fed babies is to have the water at 70 degrees and to make it up fresh.
I recently ran a creche where 2 mums brought their milk in a tommee tippee flask and I made it for them into sterilised bottles and then cooled it down. This was great and really easy for us.
I then ran another creche and had several mums just tell us there was a bottle in the bag, to give at 11am etc. so I checked the bag and the milk was pre- made and came from the fridge but we don't have facilities to store milk at every venue.
I don't really have a problem with this, but I just feel a bit awkward when I know its not ideal.
I just wondered how nurseries deal with bottles, do mums bring them and you make up fresh?
Do you have a policy whereby all mums do the same?
I'm just wondering if I could ask mums to do it a different way to what they are used to or is that OTT for a 2 hour creche.
Some ideas would be helpful, thanks

Hi,

We ask for sterilised bottles, powder and then we make up fresh. We have some parents that want to bring in pre-made. We have a policy that states the Department of health guidlines, on the bottom it states that should parents wish to bring in pre-made bottle they can do but have to sign to say this.

If you do not have a fridge on site at some venue this could be difficult, perhaps state that they must bring in umade bottles or cartons?

We also, ask for sterilized bottles, and powder pre-measured, then we make them up as and when needed.
Some nurseries do provide everything, i have worked in one like that, they labeled all the bottles differently (with nail polish, although the child's initials would be fine) we had a tin of all the children's different milks, this was back in the day when you could pre-make them, so we did in the morning and then chill them and put them in the fridge, i haven't worked there for seven years so i would have thought there policy would have changed.

Some nurseries use the pre-made cartons, you could bulk buy these from costco, maybe a few of the most popular brands and provide theses, parents could then use these, maybe for a little bit of an extra charge. No fridge needed for these.
