How far away is your DC's nursery?

Currently looking into nursery options for DS1, 2.5. We were intending to send him to a local nursery which was about a 10 minute walk away, or 5 minutes by car, however we have just found another nursery we would much prefer he went to as it's bilingual. DS speaks English and French (his dad is half French) and we are really keen for him to go to a bilingual nursery so he can continue to develop both languages. There are no bilingual nurseries locally, this is the closest one that has a space. It will mean employing a full time nanny to do drops off and pick ups but we were thinking of doing this anyway as we will need separate care for DS2, 5 months. Would anyone see the drive as a big problem? It's not ideal but I think it's worth it for the right nursery. I suppose he won't make friends locally but he already has a few close friends who live nearby and I don't think this is much of a problem at this age.

how far is the new nursery?

if you were going to get a nanny anyway and the nanny is happy to do it then go for it.
but i am sure he'd be absolutely fine in the closer nursery as presumably his dad speaks french to him anyway?
so i wouldn't put him in there unless you are definitely sure you're getting the nanny

oh and to answer your question, ds2's nursery is a 15 min walk

Our nursey is vey close, lees than 10 minutes walk which has been a godsend. My DC are also bilingual and TBH I would have been willing to travel had there been a bilingual nursery.

Would a french nanny or au pair be an option? Assuming you're in the UK.

My daughter's nursery is about as far away from our house as it could be and still be in the same town Grin It's a 15/20 minute drive on a good day - usually 30 mins. Sometimes takes 40 mins to get home. It's a fantastic nursery though and, despite it being very inconvenient sometimes, it's worth it.

My son's nursery is 8 miles away. It's in the town where I work rather than where we live.

I chose it because he started there at 4 months old and I wanted to be able to get there really quickly if I was needed. It also meant that I could go into nursery to feed him. It was also the best nursery I visited by a long way. It also has an Ofsted "Outstanding" rating too.

If I were starting nursery with him now (2 years old) I would probably put him in a nursery in the town in which we live because then he stands more chance of meeting children that he will go on to be at school with (no guarantees I reaslise, but more likely than in a totally different borough as he is now).

My DS's nursery is on my street, a 5 minute walk away :o

JaynieB · 19/09/2010 21:14

DD at school nursery now - 15 minute walk (5 mins on way back without DD) previous day nursery, 1 mile away (10 min drive)
I work approx 50 minute drive away, DP often works from home.
I wouldn't worry about nursery being a bit further away, friends they make at this age are transitory, yous son will easily make new friends when he starts school.

6.5 miles, the nearest nursery with an 8am start

smokinaces · 19/09/2010 21:17

DSs nursery is currently a 15 minute walk or a 2 minute drive.

However, when we picked it we lived on the other side of town, so it was a 20minute drive away.

tbh, imo friendships at nursery are not long term or really outside of the nursery so I would go with your favourite one as opposed to the nearest?
