Before I go mental at the nursery I wanted to canvass some opinion. My daughter has just turned 2 and attends a generally well regarded private nursery 4 days per week. We pay about £60 a day (not that it should matter).

She has recently started singing the "Bob the Builder" theme song which I found a little odd as she has never seen it at home. On questioning her she told us that she had watched it at nursery. To be honest I just thought that she was just babbling and someone had sung her the song whilst reading a book or something like that.

My other half today asked the nursery if they ever allow the children to watch tv. I am so shocked to hear that they do "sometimes" (which I read as regularly as my other half said that the nursery teacher was really cagey) "as part of calm time".

Surely this is not acceptable. I only allow her to watch TV occasionally (and have limited that to only a couple of kids programmes). Be really grateful for any views on this.

I think if your dd is at nursery all day then quiet time in the form of watching tv is fine
I assume she no longer naps?
She probably also goes on the pc and might have picked up the song from there
tv isn't as evil as people make out
hey, she's learnt a song from it hasn't she !!

I'm rather old fashioned in my views about TV, but I would be extremely unhappy about my children watching TV at nursery - there are plenty of ways to have quiet time than putting the TV on. My son (nearly 4yo) has quiet time by listening to teachers reading books (often falling asleep as a result!)in the quiet corner (rug with cushions) listening to quiet music - or drawing.
That said, he has picked up an interest in Bob the builder, ben 10 and spiderman from his peers - tho he hasn't a clue what they are - bluffs when I ask him!

I'd speak to her key carer and then the manager.

We had the same issue at nursery and several other parents felt the same - we spoke to the nursery manager and she put a stop to it.
I wouldn't be happy paying for my children to watch tv

It wouldn't bother me at all ..

Many nurseries will use a particular 'popular culture' cartoon or other programme to support a topic and Bob the Builder goes well with a theme on 'houses and homes' helping children to understand what goes on on a building site. However if they are watching just anything and it's everyday then I'd put in a strong complaint. If the manager can't fully justify why they watch what they do then its a bit suspect.

Lots of settings do use televisions as a way to keep the kids occupied whilst staff clean up after lunch, whilst children are going home etc.
I don't agree with television at nursery but it is sometimes necessary to get some work done.

DD watches TV at her nursery. Usually in winter at end of day when it's cold, dark and wet and kids are restless but can't play out. It doesn't bother me as long as it's appropriate stuff.
