We’re two female founders in our 30s developing a new protein shot designed for women and are currently arguing over what the brand should actually look like.

Rather than sitting in our own little bubble, we thought Mumsnet might be the best place to get some properly honest opinions…:)
We’ve narrowed it down to a few different design directions and made this survey. It's very quick and genuinely takes about 2 minutes!
Would love to know which one you’d actually pick up and why (and which one you absolutely wouldn’t).

Thank you in advance!

That’s a very good point, and a great study. Our protein shots use an innovative type of whey protein called beta-lactoglobulin (BLG), which is naturally particularly rich in leucine. This allows us to deliver 20g of protein with a high leucine content in a tiny, convenient 100ml shot. We also won’t be adding any synthetic sweeteners, which is why we’re spending additional time in R&D to make sure we can deliver a great-tasting product with as clean and simple a formulation as possible.

This explains a lot. You're focused on product development. Which is great! But you're going straight to how it might look in packaging. You've missed out a huge chunk of brand development by doing this.

A load of brands, products. No I’d scroll past.

Yes, I found it odd being asked to assess 'colours' and 'tone' as if these were features that might consciously direct my choice. While they might very well influence me unconsciously, surely you have to maintain the polite fiction that the branding is something to assist us in making a rational choice about what is potentially an effective product? - which would mean asking us which colours, etc., are most successful at conveying whatever real benefit your product is meant to offer (compared with other UPF protein sources).

Skipping past that consideration, and simply asking us "Does banana yellow appeal?" feels like saying the quiet part out loud ("We want to make you chose our product based on vibe, not functionality"). Having seen how comprehensively your notion of messaging puts the cart before the horse, I certainly wouldn't be interested in your product.

BTW, does anything at all about your construction of the protein shot actually tailor itself to women's bodies in a scientifically plausible way? Or is the targeting of women just on a par with the choice of a colour - just something aimed at promoting sales?

the yellow one was happy, and I liked the women in the images, but they need to be older, fatter, and maybe, in groups, like... they have friends, and fun? more... dove branding, or the current boots TV advert. they both hit the spot.
But, the white writing on the yellow background: I can't read that. Black, maybe? Then I could see it.

The blue one... all very medical. rubber gloves. nah. It's not medicine, is it, it's... powdered egg (looking at you, leucine!)

and the final one... ugg boots, and beigey-pink. nah. Boring.

Is this product aimed at a specific demographic? I assume, collagen, leucine, protein: you want menopausal women with poor eyesight and slightly saggy faces. They're the target market... so... vote yellow. but fatter wiminz, wearing spectacles.

AlwaysRightISwear · 12/09/2026 21:59

The yellow is hideous. The navy and green clashes. The last one is OK. But TBH I'm not your target market because I would never but your product anyway.

I'm pleased it won't have sweetener in, that appeals to me. I don't really understand the survey though, do you mean the 3 options are advertising? If so, slim people doing pilates do not appeal to me and neither do chemicals. I think beige is on its way out.

Depends upon whether you want to knock back lots of sugar or stevia in this chemical goop sold on the shelf next to the Huel and Frijj milkshakes, I guess.
