Research Survey: British Women's opinions of "Woke"

Greetings Mumsnet Community,

I am a researcher currently conducting doctoral work on the perceptions of women around the concepts and ideas often categorized popularly as "woke". This research is being conducted at the Sorbonne IV in Paris under the department HDEA, Histoire et Dynamique des Espaces Anglophones. This survey is anonymous. The ethics statement is to be found at the beginning of the survey.

Your participation is invaluable for this work and will contribute to understanding the positions of British women on contemporary issues around women's rights, politics and society.

This survey is posted on the Survey Monkey platform and is designed to be brief, an estimated 6 minutes to complete.

Woke in Britain: Female Perspectives

Many thanks for reading and thank you in advance for your kind participation.

Rebecca

Lots of words were originally about one thing and have morphed through usage. And one of the options this question's drop down menu is "sensitive to social justice issues" which would logically include issues relating to race and ethnicity.

I’ve done the survey but disagree with lumping the LGB with the TQ+.

this is the problem with so called DEI. It’s all about force teaming the LGB with the TQ+. Anti woman. And nothing about minority ethnicity or religion.

I have no problem with DEI if that’s what it genuinely is. But that’s not what it is anymore and that’s clearly not what this survey is about. If I say I’m not woke and disagree with DEI I look like I’m anti equality but the truth is I’m anti the male rights movement that has subsumed DEI

Just because you wish to accept a low bar does not mean others need to. Anyone with half a brain would understand the issue with lumping racisim in with 'sensitive to social justice issues'. Just like always lumping LGB with TQ+.

Erasure is unacceptable to the informed.

I wasn't going to post again on this thread but it's annoyed me so much.

As per my original posts, woke did not originally mean "sensitive to social justice issues", it meant Black people "waking up" to a sense of how society was unjust to them "I done woke up"

None of the drop down posts remotely reflects that. That is why people feel excluded.

It is like posting survey about feminism and offering 4 definitions none of which mention women.

Yes words evolve but surely you'd have the original meaning as an option? Why should that be categorised as other?

Again, I'm an academic and this wouldn't get through our ethics.

Since the OP isn't interested in the faults being pointed out with the research survey, perhaps the supervisor Dr. Louise Dalingwater at the Sorbonne might want to hear comments?

ResidentA · 04/02/2026 19:50

I believe that I have responded to the comments in this thread. Dr Dalingwater approved the survey. So, feel free. All of the comments in this thread will be reviewed with her as they are most revealing: Thank you for your contribution:
