Hello, I’m at my wits’ end.
My mum who is 81 is in serious cognitive decline and has been for about 5 years. She doesn’t have a diagnosis because she refuses to go to the doctor and she goes berserk if anyone mentions it. To be honest, we don’t any more because it’s just too upsetting for her and for anyone who might be in the room at the time.
She’s probably too far gone for any medication now anyway.
She also has a problem with her knee which is seriously affecting her mobility and she won’t wear glasses despite being very short sighted.
My Dad is 85 and in very good health, physically and cognitively.
The issue is the condition of their house. It is cluttered, messy and dirty and I can’t even begin to describe the state of the bathroom….😩. They can’t keep on top of the washing and now both look unkempt and scruffy.
This was never them in the past and it’s so sad to see.
I have plenty of time on my hands and really want to help with the housework, ironing etc but my Mum maintains that she can do it herself when she clearly can’t. Whenever I offer, she gets really stroppy with me and we end up falling out. My Dad would accept the help but he daren’t say it because she just goes mad at him too!
I’m at a complete loss at how to change things. They would probably be entitled to all sorts of benefits but wouldn’t dream of claiming anything and just won’t accept any kind of help with anything.
Does anyone have any experience of anything like this? I’m so down about it.

Do either you or your Dad have LPA ?
Check with Adult Social Services if they can help.

Your mum is reacting to you as her child so what do you know?!!
You need to get tough and get professionals involved.
I’m afraid that sometimes you have to be quite harsh.
”you are starting to look and smell unkempt. I know that’s not what you want. Your house is becoming cluttered and your safety is a concern. I am going to ask for some support for you from social services. I cannot manage your needs myself’”

Either have the row a few times and clean her house or don’t

if you do have the row she’ll get fed up with having it after the first ten times.

Myself and my siblings have LPA.
I’ve broached this with them but neither of them will engage with any outside agencies.
But thank you.

I’ve already spoken to my Dad about the situation…..he has asked me not to get anyone involved because he’ll suffer the brunt of it.
I offered today to do some laundry/ironing for them as they are going away to visit some relatives for a few days. My Mum yelled at me saying she can do it herself. My Dad just looked broken. The clothes will probably just get stuffed in a suitcase any old how.

They’re going away this week for a few days so I’ll go in and clean but she’ll make my life a misery when she comes home when she realises. I would honestly like to go NC but I couldn’t do that to my Dad. I feel so sorry for him. He seriously needs to grow a pair and deal with her but he can’t/won’t.

Time to discuss with your siblings and between you take control whether they like it or not. The contact with Adult Social Services is for them to support you as much as your parents.
It's emotional but sometimes tough love is better than letting people deteriorate.
