Is it me or are swimming pools getting colder?

It might be me, but are swimming pools getting colder? I can only go once in a blue moon due to long covid which has declined in big jumps, so not sure if it’s me feeling the cold more or pools are just very cold now! It was still lovely to be able to go.

My eight-year-old has been complaining of this for a while. And she doesn’t normally feel the cold much, so maybe the water at our local Council swimming pool is really cold.

I think you may just be experiencing it as cold because you don't go very often. When you go regularly you 'know' the temperature so aren't surprised when you get in. I swim at a public pool three times a week and the water is the same temp as it's been for the past 15 years.

Most pools are kept at 28-29 degrees. When you next go, ask them the temperature.

Funny you should ask

i’ve been thinking about going swimming but with the hot weather, I thought the combination of the heating for the pool and the heat outside might make everything really unpleasantly hot

Mentioned it to a couple of people and they said “ no, the council pool is always cold”. Maybe I should give it a try!

Probably true. The increased cost of energy is likely to mean they're practising the same energy saving methods that households are advised to do if they want to reduce their energy costs. Turn the temperature down a degree or two.

Yes they are.

Some are designed to be colder (mainly 50m pools use for performance meets).

The rest is financial.

Our local pool is definitely cooler. I used to be able to stand about while kids were splashing around but now I need to do a couple of lengths every 5 minutes or so to warm up. I expect it’s the increasing cost of heating it. Most of the small folk in the learner pool have wetsuit type costumes now which were rarely seen when we were in that era.

Council pools have always been cold!
Lane swimming pools are colder than fun pools and teaching pools.
Maybe pool operators are sneakily turning down temps to cut costs?

Our council pool is freezing. It was so bad at a school swimming lesson one of the kids had to get out to warm up because her lips were going blue and she couldn't stop shivering.
I think it's cost cutting.
