EU ETIAS and ETA - help I’m confused 😕

And googling isn’t helping!

So, flying to Berlin in October. DH and I still have our old EU passports and DD renewed recently so has a new UK one. All with chips and I realise that our EU passports don’t make much diff in terms of entry/exit anymore.

Id not heard of either of the above until reading by fine print in travel docs from TUI that I received today and saw EU ETIAS. I understand its going to cost roughly £20 each and hasn’t yet launched. So I’m watching this space.

I then looked on Martin Lewis and can see there is also a ETA.

So on the basis we have already booked and full payment due in a a few weeks -

Does anyone know if there is any chance our ESTAs will be turned down?! Admin guessing we’re screwed regards travel insurance as bet it won’t cover. And …

Is the ETA tbing just entry into UK and for non UK citizens?

Im terrified I’m going to overlook something 😳 Why the fuck is it so complicated?!!!

Ok so have googles some more and it seems ETA is for non uk residents arrival here. So I think I can cross that off my panic to-do list

There is also EES which is the cause of a lot of the queues that people are reporting in European airports this year. This is where people with non-Schengen country passports (which includes UK) will have to register at the European airport to enable them to use the electronic gates. It includes fingerprint scanning plus something else but il not entirely sure what, as despite having travelled to Europe 3 times since last October when gradual introduction was meant to start, I’ve yet to register. This is nothing to worry about though, outside of the fact that it’s causing delays, but I would imagine Berlin in October will be fairly straightforward.

I think ETIAS is meant to be introduced towards the end of the year, not holding my breath on it, and I think there will be a lot of publicity when it does.

EES is often done for the first time at a kiosk at arrivals. You register your info and they record fingerprints and facial scan, then you go through passport control.

After that you’ll just have to have facial scan when entering or exiting EU. I believe it lasts three years but not entirely sure.
