What sun cream is working well abroad this year for kids? Boots caused burns last year!

As title- last year we used the usual sultan once (applying every 2 hours at least and they burnt on their shoulders and ended up with red cheeks.

Want to avoid this happening- what does everyone recommend?

You need to look for sun cream with 5 stars on the bottle. The cream needs to be applied in advance so it has time to soak into the skin and then top up before exposure. As there skin hasn’t been exposed to the sun for long periods I also suggest ‘sun breaks’ and staying out of the sun for periods of time. A good excuse is going for lunch, having a drink or going to get ice cream. We used Aldi sun cream 50spf. You could also use rashies for the first few days.

Calypso or Aldi are my go to, never burn with either and I’m ghostly white. I apply about 15 mins before any sun exposure, top up regularly and after swimming.
caps and rash vest/t-shirts will help if they’re in the pool a lot and time in the shade if you’re out in the mid day sun.
I love a lunchtime nap on holiday as a break from the sun. I find the heat tires me out a lot!

ladygaga Thank you, yes the routine was cream on generously about half an hour before going out to the pool at 10, play in the water until 12/ 12.30 but they’d have a layer of sun cream on about 11 because of being in/ out water.
After the lunch break it’s rash vests on for at least 2 hours then shade/ cream and about another hour in the pool.

They won’t keep a rash vest on all day (sensory issues) so I do after lunch as the sun is usually hottest then and that’s the agreement to go back in the water!

Was the aldi suncream any good?
I’m pretty sure the sultan has 5 stars 🤔

@managingexpectations I would love a nap 🤣
Where is Calypso cream from?

An hour between application if I have understood that correctly, is too far apart, especially for young skin, I'd guess.

Also, I read Factor 5 stops Vit D uptake. No idea. I use factor 3.

Slather them in sun cream and have a fantastic holiday OP.

Avoiding the sun between 11 and 3 might help prevent burns more?

tellmesomethingtrue · Yesterday 02:25

The sun caused the burns, not ‘Boots’

Lived in the Med for many years … Soltan is actually one of the better brands ..
To be honest it’s more likely they’ve just not had enough on and it’s rubbed off .. and they should be indoors or in the shade between 12 and 3 .
I did that with mine .
Definitely take some time out of the sun and you should be fine

Sorry fir the repeat posts I’m overseas and the Wi-Fi is very erratic

Ohthatsabitshit · Yesterday 02:34

You should avoid the midday sun. Have lunch and a snooze inside afterwards. 12-2 is a crazy time to be out in the sun.

I’ve heard this mentioned with Soltan before:

Live in the Caribbean - Soltan is always good when we’ve used it. Nivea also good but cheapest and best I’ve found is Altruist. We order in bulk and bring back with us.

PeonyBulb · Yesterday 03:22

It washes off in water they all do so you’ll always get sun burnt

PeonyBulb · Yesterday 03:24

That said we never get burnt using Reimanns P20 it seems to stay on in water

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · Yesterday 03:41

You need a water resistant sunscreen, use more than you think, re-apply more frequently and have breaks where they're not in the sun.

Lougle · Yesterday 03:52

I remember reading an article in the news about suncream. The amounts needed to properly protect you are crazy. Most families pack a bottle of suncream for the whole family. To get adequate protection (as the claims advertised on the bottle) for a week's holiday, you need about 3 bottles each.

Mad dogs and Englishmen!

We visited DH’s Spanish friends and their rule of thumb is that if your shadow is shorter than you, stay out of the sun. Which was effectively 12 until 3. They are dark skinned and born in Spain.

As a PP said, it’s not the Soltan causing burns, it’s the sun.

LanyardSpaghetti · Yesterday 05:46

I recommend wearing more clothing, including wide brimmed hats for mucking about in the water, and, as pp have mentioned, keeping your kids out of the sun when their shadows are shorter than their height - stay out of the sun, cover up, apply sunscreen to exposed skin.

If your kids aren't able to cover up effectively due to sensory issues, you could holiday somewhere they are less likely to get sunburned. Scottish islands are pretty good in that regard, and have some of the most incredible beaches you're ever likely to come across.

drunkelephant83 · Yesterday 05:59

Riemann P20 kids we are using currently whilst abroad, no sun burn so far.

Chocolatefreak · Yesterday 06:08

Altruist factor 50. Non perfumed and ethically made, available in Sainsbury’s. But yes, you can’t be out all day in the sun.

FlowerSticker · Yesterday 06:11

Use better stuff P20, Ultrasun are two good water resistant brands

Factor 50.

We only use 50, and will only use 30as and absolute emergency, like no other available in the shop!
