Is it better to have disposable income or a nicer area long term?

Am stuck on which way to jump and so looking for things I might’ve missed to factor in the mix so I can reach a final decision.
About to retire and have inherited a retirement flat in my hometown which is nice and manageable and I can sell my current flat and have disposable income but the area is going downhill and there are daily issues in the streets and town. Hometown has lots of resources as is big but also has the downtown that comes with that,
or I can sell my flat, try and sell the retirement one and move to another area which is much nicer but more expensive to buy in and to live in but will still have family and friends nearby and but will have much less money for holidays etc.
i keep thinking if I move to the retirement one I’ll be able to do interesting things in retirement but I won’t be on holiday all the time and worry about an area in decline.
any suggestions welcome!

Nicer area.

A safer area is a big positive.

You will feel more comfortable living in a nicer area. Not having to worry so much about a decline.
Holidays are lovely, but home is home.

From experience, go for the nicer area. You end up spending less in later years of retirement anyway and being at home more. Go for the nicer area.

Oh my goodness definitely the nicer area.

I made the mistake of moving to a less nice area because I wanted a big garden. Yes I love the garden but the problems I've had with the behaviour of the local children has at times made my life almost unbearable.

Imo no amount of extra disposable income compensates for feeling safe and comfortable in your own home.

I’d move to the area closest to your friends and family

Nicer area. Your day to day quality of living will be better.

Nicer area!

It makes so much difference to your day-to-day quality of life.

Always nicer area, absolutely no debate. Happy to downsize to save money, but not moved to a dodgy area.

Good luck selling the retirement flat! They aren’t easy to sell and if it’s not in a great area, buyers will have reservations, as you do! That’s why you should not go there.

The TV programme is called 'Location, Location, Location' for a reason! The nicer area gets my vote.

Nicer area, you will spend the majority of your time there. If you are there into old age, holidays are not really relevant and you want friends and family nearer. The holiday phase of retirement can be relatively short.

You could always work a bit longer or pick up some temporary work if you want some extra cash.

Nicer area. Also the retirement flat may have increasing service charges.

Nicer area. We moved only a mile away last year to a better area and it transformed our life. Doubled our outgoings but we are so much happier I wouldn't change it for anything.

LittleRedRidingBoots · Today 09:27

I’d go with a nicer area nearer to friends and family without a doubt.

its in my hometown and having to pay a monthly fee is a big reason to stay in it and sell my flat. If I move I’ll have to pay it until it’s sold as well as have more limited funds
