Every time I go to another country I take back things I think wow wish we did that in uk eg

•beer served in an ice cold glass from the freezer

•always getting water when you sit down in restaurant without asking

•in Ireland castles are free to get into in summer holidays!

what else do you wish we had here?

Fruit, veg and bakery to be all per weight/piece without having to pay premium. Lidl does it and afaik they are only ones doimg it for reasonable prices. Basically the only reason we shop in lidl! I like to pick my veg and fruit and I don't need 6 bins, I need 2🤷
Such basic thimg tbh.

Deli counters to by per weight, without premium price tag, like it used to be here as well.

I liked how people cycle to the bus stop, leave their bike there to get the bus to the city and then return back on the bus and still expect their bike to be there even though it wasn't locked to anything to cycle home again.

That seems inconceivable to anyone living in UK.

Sadly, much of this is connected to people, values, behaviours and attitudes. Respecting shared spaces, not stealing others property, trusting others, independent children, people who make good active choices.

In The Netherlands, seeing children riding their bikes to school, or the whole class riding to their swimming lesson. Even more mind blowing watching pupils having their school break beside the main tram system, opposite a major Amsterdam museum. No school fences, no school gates, just common sense and children who are aware of themselves and others.

Carports in supermarket car parks like they have in Mediterranean countries, so that you're not returning to a boiling hot car with your shopping. Some also have solar panels on the roof to provide power for the shop.

Riverpaddling · 19/04/2026 22:19

Our local supermarket has done this. I was sad to see they were digging up the trees in the car park, but then saw that they were putting solar panels above the parking spaces. Cars stay cool, power for the shop. And the trees were replanted elsewhere.

French (Super U) supermarkets do this. The solar panels fuel the EV points and supply the shop. The covers keep the sun and rain off the cars and shoppers. Wins all round.
