Is Mumsnet quieter than it used to be?

I’ve been an avid reader and occasional commentor on here for over a decade now and I’ve definitely noticed a drop off in new threads over the past year or so. I wonder if it’s because people are turning to ChatGTP with their woes?

chat gpt doesn't call me a cunt like I've been called on here so I don't think so 🤣🤣🤣

It's definitely quieter, think for longer than the past few years. Not sure of the reasons but think it's more than just Chat GPT.

SilkyredPjs1 · 02/04/2026 20:19

Yup, been thinking it for the past few months. I can remember I’d logon and there’d be loads of fast moving threads want to read, different ones every day. Now it’s the same ones appearing day after day.

I think people use Facebook groups too for advice. Also, people don’t tend to post on social media as much these days and I’m wondering if this is an extension of that.

I agree it's quieter and less interesting as well. It may be chatgbt which gives rather overly balanced psychology book answers or quotes research is a calmer response and some people like that. It also agrees with you and doesn't call you pathetic or ask why you had more than one child with a man baby :). It might be the fear of trash papers putting your woes onto news sites. It may also be the trolls, I would ever post an actual problem on here now whereas I used to when the kid were small. I wouldn't want the insults!

Yes - Style and Beauty (my favourite topic) has definitely become very boring. But generally mumsnet is quieter and just less interesting.

Notoironing · 03/04/2026 00:19

Personally I’d never start a thread these days because it might go on Facebook.

shuddacuddadidnt · 03/04/2026 00:21

All the bandwith has been taken by ME or Trump threads.

Ponderingwindow · 03/04/2026 00:23

People have to turn off adblockers to access mumsnet. It’s a deterrent to bring in new users and a deterrent for current users to sign on.

Im sure the people who run the site decided trade off was worth it and likely continue to watch the numbers.

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/04/2026 00:24

Much much quieter.

LittleGreenDragons · 03/04/2026 00:50

A lot of people left when MN forced people to turn off adblockers making the site unusable for them. I really miss certain posters who had to leave.

denisdenisdenis · 03/04/2026 00:59

Years ago I used to start several thread a day.
Then over the years it became posting several times a day.
Now I barely post once a week or less.
I was reprimanded I believe unfairly and it’s really put me off.
This place used to be good because of the commitment to free speech.
Im not interested in censored social media.

toastofthetown · 03/04/2026 01:08

Mumsnet seems more mean spirited than other sites, so I don’t come here for advice. I had a couple of posts asking for advice when I was pregnant and instead of being helpful posters just made ‘witty’ jokes instead and that’s a general trend I see. They weren’t vulnerable threads so I rolled my eyes and moved on, but while I still come here for entertainment but I wouldn’t post for advice because I don’t find it a supportive place.

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 03/04/2026 02:03

I guess it has been a bit quieter. However, when I first started using MN I could read every single thread and then wait..........before a new one was posted. Like across the whole site. So compared to that, not really.

canuckup · 03/04/2026 02:09

Yup, it's quieter

CollaterlieSistersSister · 03/04/2026 02:22

Definitely seems quieter. ‘Active threads’ sometimes hardly changes for hours.

I too think the increase in relentless, overbearing fucking ads saw a lot of people wave bye bye. Until I started using the waterfowl related workaround, I was ready to flounce too.

dinbin · 03/04/2026 03:45

I say this all the time.
I don’t understand how it’s supposed to have millions of users because when you see the “who is reading this thread” numbers it’s hardly ever triple figures.
You recognise the same posters/user names with the same points.
Plus the average user seems quite old. Nothing wrong with that as such but it means the points of reference are often quite outdated. Obviously users have grown with the site but where is the new blood?

I think people are getting more wary of the Daily Fail or social media picking up their stories, that and security breaches, constant closing down of threads, removing messages etc mean people are losing faith in it, it feels like it's had its day and now everyone is on Tickety Tok.
MN was good in it's hayday though.
